A New Song
Fills the Halls
By: MariaBaska

Bishop Miege unveiled its
new song Spirit of Bishop Miege,
written by Mrs.Robin Christie, at
the all school Mass on Nov. 1.

Mrs. Christie said she
hopes that this song will be sung
before all varsity games and that it
will live on for a long time. The
lyrics convey the school colors,
mission and Catholic faith. The
Concert Chorale sings this song at
the beginning of every class for the
daily prayer and to warm up their
vocals.

Mrs. Christie wrote the
lyrics (printed below) herself, but

Her halls, her fields, the Stags

We are strong and loyal in our

We raise our song for new and

This song is sure to be
a great addition to Miege and its
tradition, said Dr. Joe Passantino,

The Cause of Kairos Fever;

Seniors Sign Up in Record Numbers
By: JennieLittleton
Editor-in-Chief

Traditionally each year, three
three-day retreats are publicized,
planned, and prepared for, waiting
for seniors to sign up. Kairos, a Greek
term meaning The Lords
Time, is the title used to
refer to these exclusively senior retreats. The first retreat
of the year, K-40, occurred
earlier last month in October,
while K-41 will be in December,
and the last planned Kairos
retreat, K-42, is set for February.

This year, possibly due to the
often encouraging words of the
senior theology
teacher and new
retreat director,
Mr. Bill Creach,
the seniors leapt
with more enthusiasm than usual at
the chance to go on Kairos. Before, Mr. Steve Koesterer was head of the retreat,
and didnt have nearly the
amount of daily exposure to seniors as

Trick or Treat So
Others Can Eat

Mr. Creach does, to advertise Kairos.

Thanks to this years unprecedented
show of spirit and zeal for the program, each retreat has more seniors
than expected, and for the first time at
Miege, a fourth Kairos retreat was onsidered but was not able to be scheduled.

Not much is revealed about
Kairos until the retreat has
begun, but that is not meant
to be a discouraging factor.
Surprise is a better choice
of words than secret is. There
is nothing classified about the
retreat. I think a surprise has
a maximum impact when the
person does not have any
idea what to expect.
Its like knowing
what your presents are before
Christmas
or
your birthday.
They are still
fun to receive,
but you already
know
what
youre going to get,
Mr. Creach said about
the mystique that seems
to surround Kairos.
Senior Abigail Tuttle, a K-40
veteran, said the bliss of the retreat

comes from grow(ing) in relationships with other people and see(ing)

the good in everyone. Summed up,
her experience was nice and refreshing.

institutions in twelve states, and interestingly enough, has also been a part
of the prison ministry movement ever
since.

Mr. Creach explained that
Mieges history with Kairos started when, after the
retreat had spread from
Catholic/Jesuit school to
school, five juniors were
sent to the retreat held by
St. Thomas Aquinas to be
Bishop Mieges first retreat leaders. That was in
February 2000; by March
of that same year, Miege had held K1
at St. Johns Center in KCMO.

Now held at the Franciscan
Prayer Center, Kairos is well respected by Miege and surrounding Catholic schools. Mr. Creach describes it as,
the best opportunity Bishop Miege
offers for students to reflect on their
relationshipswith self, God, and the
people in their lives.

Ask senior Lily Young-Mills,
who went on the trip as a junior and
came back this year as a senior leader,
Kairos can be good for anyone, as
long as they are open-minded to what
happens. Kairos is an amazing experience that I wish everyone could go
through.

Kairos is an amazing
experience that I wish
everyone could go through,
says Lily Young-Mills

Even those who havent had
the chance to go on Kairos feed off
of the good spirits of Kairos alum
and support the retreat. Senior Emily
Schultz has had multiple older siblings go on the retreat and witnessed
the amazing and life changing results the Kairos retreat can produce,
and she says she want(s) that experience, too.

What those who have yet to
experience the retreat can know is
that Kairos is a nationwide spiritual
growth program which was started by
Roman Catholics in Spain in 1944. The
idea caught on in the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1965, where it was changed into
a special experience for youth. By 1968
Kairos had etched itself into Catholic

November 15, 2013

ne week from today, Friday, Nov. 22, is the 50th anniversary of the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He was Americas first,
and so far only, Catholic president. The events of that dark Friday
and the days immediately following marked a turning point in news coveragefor the first time the entire country could watch history being made
from their own living roomson their black and white televisions.

To commemorate this The Miegian asked the adults in the building
for any recollections they had of that weekend, and we were overwhelmed
by the response. What we share is just a sample of the feedback we received.

In the pursuit of this, we also discovered that Miege has connections everywhere. James P. Hosty Jr., the FBI agent who had been assigned
to investigate Lee Harvey Oswald just before Oswald shot the President,
eventually moved to this area and enrolled his 10 children at St. Agnes and
Bishop Miege.

I was just getting home from kindergarten at St. Agnes. My mom was crying
in the living room and watching TV. She said the President had been shot and
died. It is one of my earliest memories. I also remember watching the funeral
and feeling so sad for Caroline and John. I was close to their age and felt so sad
for them to lose their dad.
Mrs. Elaine Schmidtberger

My mom was in the hospital and

my dad was at a Intercontinental
Ballistic Missile training school for
the Air Force, and I was at a family friends house because I was
sick and had to stay at home from
school I heard the news and went
to tell the family who were in the
kitchen having lunch. They didnt
believe me. With only three networks available, we watched as
much of the funeral as we could as
we were moving to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to the new base where my
father had been transferred. We
listened to coverage on the radio
on our way across Kansas to Wyoming.

minutes, just in case. If memory
serves, I saw Lee Harvey Oswald

Pompeii is Bastilles
most popular song, with more

The repetitive lyrics that flow up

Bastille. They formed in the U.K., but have been

gaining popularity in the U.S. ever since their
first single, Pompeii, hit the radio this summer.
Bastille is fronted by lead-vocalist and songwriter
Daniel Smith, who started the band as a solo project,

These Streets

These Streets opens with
a few xylophone notes that continue (with a few mild changes)
throughout the entire song, later
joined by snapping and a snare
drum. Its arguably the most playful song on the album, and will
appeal easily to more pop-oriented
listeners.

but the band has come a long way from one man
recording songs in his bedroom. Fans of Imagine
Dragons and American Authors should definitely
give Bastille a listen.

Icarus

Icarus is a high energy
song that again utilizes the
talent of the bands drummer,
Chris Wood, to set a lively pace.
Between this signature drumming and Smiths vocal work,
Icarus utilizes both piano and
violin to set this song apart from
the rest of the album.

Overjoyed

The albums fourth song
slows things down a bit, utilizing both piano and electronic
beats to lighten the tempo. It
provides a nice transition into
These Streets which keeps the
electronic influence but picks up
the speed.

Flaws

Picking the pace right
back up after Oblivion, this
song serves to re-establish Bastilles playful, electronic sound
that is scattered throughout the
album. It talks about how our
faults work to define us and that
we should learn to embrace them
or fix them, not bury them away.

Laura Palmer

This song is just a
formula for success: the bands
typical drums and vocals shine
throughout song, especially the
chorus, with lyrics that stress
following your heart. It may
be a cliche, but thats why it
works.

Things We Lost in the Fire

At the beginning,
Things We Lost in the Fire appears to be a slow, emotional ballad. But as the song progresses,
the tempo picks up into a powerful song about what happens
when a relationship goes down
in flames.

Bad Blood

From start to finish, Bad
Blood is an intense song. With a
focus on lower notes and a powerful drum in the background, its
different but definitely still catchy.
The lyrics fit the tone perfectly,
speaking about failed friendships
and their lasting effects.

Members (from left) Chris Wood, Kyle Simmons, Dan Smith, and Will Farquasrson, played together before the bands formation, but only when they
began to perform Smiths original music did they adopt the name Bastille.

Weight of Living, Pt. II

Layered vocals and constant percussion are this songs
strengths. The chorus opens what
would be a very monotonous
song into a play between brooding
verses and an explosive harmony,
a strange contrast that somehow
works very well.

Oblivion

Acting as another
break in the album, Oblivion is an intimate ballad that
discusses the uncertainty of
relationships, and that no matter
how hard we try to hold on to
some things, sometimes we just
have to let them go.

www.bishopmiege.com

Daniel in the Den

Opening with a delicate
piano piece, Daniel in the Den
could have been a great slower
song on the album. Instead, it
seems Bastille tried to force a
Pompeii-esque chorus onto the
song, which clashes with the
piano and feels out of place and
awkwardly repetitive.

12

Get Home

Get Home closes
the album nicely by doing what
Daniel in the Den couldn't:
tying together a slow beat with a
catchy chorus. Though the beat is
soothing on its own, when combined with the vocals it becomes
a beautifully haunting melody
that begs to be replayed.

Video Games Dominating the Entertainment World

By: EricBuckels
staff writer

The gaming industry is becoming more
popular by the day and is seeing excitement in their
games and profit in their product as never before.
According to statistics from esrb.org, 67% of U.S.
households play videogames. The computer and
video game industry sold 273 million units in 2009
leading to $10.5 billion in revenue and in 2011 U.S.
gamers spent $2.9 billion on video games.

Production of blockbuster games such as
Grand Theft Auto Five is nothing to scoff at either.

The game is giving the entertainment business a

run for its money. According to dailyfinance.com
Rockstar, the company who made the game, spent
approximately $265 million to market and develop
it. In its first 24 hours on sale 11.21 million copies
were purchased. Within its first three days on the
market sales reached $1 billion compare that to this
summers biggest blockbuster at the box office, Iron
Man 3, which brought in only $372 million in its
first weekend across the globe, says Eric Bleeker
from dailyfinance.com. The gaming is giving Hollywood a run for its money and the next generation
consoles will continue to add fuel to the fire in this
entertainment battle.

Fantasy Football is a Eye Opening Experience for Fans

By: LouieLaFeve

Fantasy football, Saturday morning cartoons, and the disturbingly addictive music of Justin Timberlake. These are
the three biggest time wasters I can think
of. But nothing compares to that perfect
Monday morning feeling of knowing that
the previous day you made another man
lose just a bit of self-confidence by pummeling his fantasy team into dust and
scattering it to the wind. But dont take
my word for it.
I spend way too many hours a
week on fantasy, says senior Max Ernst,
who showed up to our leagues annual
fantasy draft sporting a dense, handwritten notebook of fantasy stats, rankings
and projections. My general interest in

November 15, 2013

pro football got me involved about two

years ago, he said.
For those of you who dont understand the particulars of fantasy football,
allow me to elaborate. Each person in
your league selects a player in each

round of your league draft. Each team
is allowed to have a quarterback, two
receivers, a tight end, two running backs,
a kicker, a defense/special teams unit,
and a flex player, who can be either a
receiver, tight end, or running back. You

are also allowed to keep five players on

your bench, who do not affect the outcome of games unless they are subbed in.
Each week, you match up against
someone else in your league, and see
who can score the most points. At the
end of the season, whoever has the best
record is crowned the champion.
Im in two leagues, said Max.
However, it is not uncommon for aficionados to be in as many as five. The level
of fanaticism fantasy football inspires in
its devotees can be shocking to outsiders.
I do lots of research from many different
sites, says Max, Including Bleacher Report, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated.
A study conducted by Challenger,
Gray and Christmas Inc. suggested that
employers might lose up to $18.6 billion
every year in lost productivity, or workers channeling their energy into their

pastime rather than profession.

But fantasy also provides an important social pastime for many people.
According to Max, with so many people
playing nowadays, it's something that
a lot of people can relate to and have an
opinion about. I personally can vouch
that from September to December, about
65 percent of my social interaction with
other humans consists of discussions related to fantasy football.
It's definitely becoming more
mainstream, said Max, Now there
are whole shows on ESPN dedicated
to analyzing fantasy football. There is
even a popular TV show, The League,
set against the background of a fantasy
league. This manager, for one, thinks that
all it can do is become more popular, and
that its about time for everyone to jump
on board.

Its 2013. Things have changed. While we
havent quite achieved the flying cars and jetpacks
we were promised, our technology has advanced
leaps and bounds from even a few decades ago.
The internet (and the ability to access it virtually
anywhere) has radically changed human relations
and the way we interact with each other.
We now have the capability in the palms of
our hands to communicate with other people who
live halfway across the world, and not only does it
exist, it is becoming widespread.

The instant access to theoretically limitless
amounts of information has transformed our
culture as well. With Netflix, Spotify, Pandora, and
YouTube, we have effectively entered a state where
no one is ever exposed to any sort of culture against
their will. The choices and options have become so
immense, consumers are reaching a point where
they have complete access to and control over all

the culture they perceive, no matter how niche.

If the only kind of music I ever wanted to listen
to was whale sounds with a techno drumbeat, I
could probably find it somewhere and listen to it
exclusively for the rest of my life.
These developments have resulted in a
phenomena virtually without precedent; the
loss of a mainstream. If you pay attention to
blockbuster movies, you will notice that every
year, there are fewer and fewer successful ones.
For every Avatar, there are three or four
Battleships. Producers pour money into films
with gaudy special effects starring famous lead
actors only to see them flop; look no further than
this summers Johnny Depp vehicle The Lone
Ranger,or the critically-acclaimed Pacific Rim.
Stephen Spielberg himself recently predicted the
implosion of Hollywood, mostly due to our
newfound ability to watch rare films from the
comfort of our own home.
This has led to a large scale distribution
of independent art the likes of which we have
never seen before. Previously, there was a clear
distribution path; an album, for instance, would

go from a band to a single on the radio to your

CD player, because that was the only way music
companies would work. Now, a band doesnt have
to wait to be discovered. They can publish their
own material online for free, and have it reach
millions of ears instantaneously.
However, there are downsides. In previous
years, the conversation was dominated by several
titans. In 1999 for instance, you could rely on
the fact that EVERYONE had heard Waterfalls
by TLC, or that your neighbor was just as likely
to have seen Titanic as you were. Now, our
cultural landscape has shifted to hundreds of small
subcultures. These days everyone is a hipster,
since whatever you like, no matter how seemingly
normal, is probably not the same as your
neighbor. No one is mainstream anymore, since the
mainstream no longer exists.
For better or for worse, this is the direction
our culture has taken. In a world full of absolute
freedom, the only downside is loneliness. Whether
you think its worth it or not, its not something
you can run from.

Family Reunions Grind my Gears

By: MarcoMarquez

Do you know what grinds my gears? When I go
to a family reunion and I dont know who anybody is. I
mean come on, Mom and Dad, why do you force me to
leave the shelter of my home and go spend quality time
with people I have never met? I understand that they are
family, but I would rather watch Netflix in my basement
than answer awkward questions from my third cousin
who used to babysit me.

Everytime theres a family gettogether, my mom just jumps at the
opportunity. My brother and I complain at
the idea, but my mom refers to something
like this as FFF (Forced Family Fun). And
of course, when she states this, you know it
wont be easy to avoid.

Now the part of the reunion that
drives me off the edge is when my mom
tries to introduce me to my cousins, aunts,
and uncles, etc. She will be like Oooo remember your
Aunt Teresa; she used to babysit you! and its like this
all day. You give the same response to everybody, which

Staggering Thoughts

By: EricBuckels

Tragedies such as the shooting
at Sandy Hook Elementary School and
others similar to it are terrible, sad, and
the perpetrators should be punished.
But to blame these tragedies on inanimate objects such as video games is
simply inane.

Prominent figures in government such as Vice president Joe Biden
have made the claim that violent video
games result in violent behavior and
should be up for increased taxation to
discourage purchases. NRA Chairman
Wayne LaPierre also stands against
violent video games saying There exists in this country a callous, corrupt
and corrupting shadow industry that
sells, and sows, violence against its
own people, through vicious, violent
Page 10

video games.

The viewpoint of organizations
such as American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy
of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is that exposure to violent media
including video games can contribute to real-life violent behavior and
harm children in many ways. These
organizations express their concerns by
saying that children learn by hearing,
seeing, and mimicking what they see
on TV, hear on the radio, and interact
with while playing video games, and
that these violent interfaces could possibly lead to desensitizing youth by
numbing them emotionally, impairing
academic performance social normality,
and leading to aggressive and violent
behavior.

However, Dr. Christopher Ferguson, a psychology professor at Texas
A&M International University argued

that many studies on the issue of media violence rely on measures to assess
aggression that dont correlate with
real-world violence and even more
important, many are observational approaches that dont prove cause and
effect.

Also, it is worth making clear
that since researchers cannot put a gun
in a young persons hand to see if he
acts more violently, they assess aggression that does not correlate with
real-world violence. Some studies are
observational and dont prove cause
and effect. Others point out that almost all of these young perpetrators
had preexisting psychological conditions, making it hard to support the
claim that violent video games could
be the sole causation for violent crime.

If there is to be any blame
given on the subject at all, it should be
directed towards the parents and the

www. bishopmiege.com

players themselves. It is the parents

responsibility to protect their children
from violence. Their job is to make sure
their children understand that these
terrible acts seen through different
violent media are never acceptable in
real life. Some easy ways to prevent
children from becoming involved in
or becoming too involved in playing
bad games is to check the rating on the
back of the games box, place the gaming console in a room where it can be
monitored, and limit their amount of
playing time so they do not become too
immersed in the game itself.

To blame violent video games
on gun-related violence it like an obese
person blaming a fork for making him
or her obese, the person is the one
to blame, not the object. Millions of
young Americans play these games
and continue with a normal and happy
life.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory?

Is Violent Media Really Affecting Our Lives?

is no. I try to be nice and everything, but, sorry, I dont

remember you from my infant days.

The only positive aspect of reunions is always,
and will forever be, the endless amounts of food and pop.
If there is nothing there to satisfy my belly, then count
me out. Also if the reunion is part get-together and part
birthday party, then youre in luck for some cake and
candy from the pinata.
There are still some downsides even to these
perks. As you grab your plate of food and sit down,
you notice a relative/stranger sit down next to you.
Next thing you know, youre having a quiet
conversation, this always happens to me, and
my brother always lucks out and is able to
walk away as he watches the scene. Also the
whole pinata thing doesnt work out so well if
you have a crowd of little cousins.

I advise everyone to learn from what I
have preached to you today. Family reunions
are a trap to a world of awkwardness. So
if you too are put in the position of FFF,
just try to play sick as convincingly as you can. You will
not regret it. Stay home and enjoy the comfort of being
undisturbed by awkward questions from distant aunts.

Going into the playoffs last week, the Stags
were ranked sixth overall in Kansas with a record
of 8 and 1. They dominated the Lansing Lions last
Friday 52 to 12, creating high expectations for their
playoff aspirations. Tonight they will take on the
Blue Valley West Jaguars at home in a rematch of
week six.

On Friday, Nov. 1, the Stags ended their
regular season on a high note by beating longtime
arch-rival Aquinas to secure homefield advantage in
the playoffs. Miege won 50 to 16 on the road in front
of a packed stadium. After resting for much of the
previous two weeks, the starters played the entire
game against the Saints, not leaving the field until
the final whistle blew. This game a strong example
of what so far has been a truly dominant season by
the Stags.
It was a good game; theyre a good team,

against the home team. Their next opponent, Chanute,
would be the real challenge; up to that point, they
were 35-0, and this set would give the Stags a chance
to see one of their possible State competitors, Chanute
also being a 4A DI school. The Stags were ready and
fired up, never relaxing through another two-set victory with scores a little tighter; 25-20 and 25-21.

Kansas player of the week for his performance,

catching six passes for 252 yards and scoring three
touchdowns after only having one touchdown
through the first eight games.
The previous week, on Oct. 25, the Bishop
Miege Stags beat the Harmon Hawks 74 to 0 at home
to celebrate senior night. Ironically, most of the seniors on the team had been benched by the halfway
mark, providing valuable experience for the underclassmen who will be required to take a larger role
starting next year.
Being able to rest our starters makes us that
much more prepared for the playoffs. Its never been
a problem in the past, said senior lineman Luke
Juarez. I dont want to jinx us, but (our playoff
chances) are looking good. Were just trying to prepare week to week, and not get ahead of ourselves.

The week before, the Stags decimated the
Turner Bears 49 to 0.

A big story in recent weeks has been the return of quarterback Ryan Willis, who was leading
the EKL in passing yards before being sidelined for
weeks five and six with a concussion. His replacement, sophomore Nolan Gray, performed well in his
absence however.
Hes a great kid. He really picked up the team

when Willis was injured, according to Luke. He

showed us that we can still play with a key member
of the team out. Nolan contributes all that he can for
the team, and I appreciate that.

I feel glad to be in the playoffs. Its gonna
be a long road, but we have faith in each other. We
know what we want to do, and thats win a State
championship. If we meet Carroll (last years champions), again, well be better prepared. We have
some unfinished business, said Kaelin.

One Golfer
to State

It was only her first year playing

tennis for Miege, but freshman Lily
Gibson made it to State.

Varied Superstitions,
Writing on the Ball

Lady Stags golf sent one player
to State this year. Regan Semien, junior,
placed 34th out of 97 golfers at State in
Wichita Oct. 21.

I had a good season and it was
quite effective in sharpening my skills; I
think between now and next season I will
be able to prepare myself to make a run
for State next year, she said.

As for the season overall, Jeff
English, head coach of the team, said,
It was a fun season and all the golfers
gained a lot more experience. He also
made a request that all the lady golfers
pick up their clubs at least once in the off
season.

What is Your Superstition??

Sydney Buckley (volleyball)- I do the same routine before I serve.
Jacob Watt (baseball)- I listen to a certain music playlist.
Steven Langley (soccer)- I put on Lucas Francos captain armband
before each game.
Coach Jon Holmes (football)- I carry a four leaf clover, money clip and
prayer card in my left pocket.
Rachel Lavry (tennis) - I grip my tennis racket in a certain spot.
Joey Shondell (lacrosse)- I wear a STAG armband on my right arm
every game.
Coach Ross Dessert (lacrosse)- When I was a goalie, I would tap the
pipes of the goal in a certain order with my stick.
Coach Jeff English (basketball)- Before the season I would watch
Hoosiers and every game I would wear a Backstreet Boys t-shirt under
my jersey.
Frank Burdolski (baseball)- Before each game, I drink Naked juice,
eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, take three Advils, use the
bathroom, put two pairs of socks on my left foot first and the two on
the right. Then, I dougie before the game starts.
Andy Ritz (cross country)- I put on my right sock and right shoe, then
left sock and left shoe.

is the Madden cover. What should
be an achievement turns to an awful hoaxing on frequent occasions.

used to gain confidence. Superstitions are wacky and foolish, but

somehow they seem to work. Michael Jordan is now considered to be
the best player ever in the game of
basketball, maybe because of his college shorts or maybe not. But if the
athlete believes it helps him or her,
then its going to boost self-esteem,
and ultimately, build the ability to
succeed.
