Math Lesson: Generating Patterns

Arizona State/Common Core Standards:
5.OA.B.3. Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify
apparent relationships between corresponding terms.
Content Area Objectives:
I can use models to identify the rule of a pattern.
Language Objectives:
Students will discuss in small groups.
Students will share their ideas with the whole class.
Vocabulary: pattern, generate, term
Materials: math book, worksheet, pencil, and toothpicks, Legos
Anticipatory Set: What does the word pattern mean? What are some examples
of patterns that you know of in your life?
Teacher Actions:
Go over board work problems.
Engage students in the anticipatory set.
Ask volunteers to define pattern and to give examples of patterns.
Discuss objective with class.
Engage students in the generating worksheet.
Ask class to follow along.
Go over how to fill out the graphic organizer.
Ask students to come up with their own pattern and identify the rule.
Ask for volunteers to share their pattern with class.
Discuss closure question.
Student Actions:
Work on board work independently.
Volunteers solve board work problems on the board.
Students think about anticipatory set question independently.
Students share with group and come up with a group definition and
examples.
Students follow along on the generating patterns worksheet.

Students make their own patterns using Legos and come up with a rule for
their pattern.
Draw their pattern and identify the rule on graphic organizer.
Volunteers may share patterns with class.
Discuss closure question as a class.

Variations:
Students trade patterns with partner and try to figure out the rule.
Modifications:
Teacher may need to provide more scaffolding to students who are having
a hard time making a pattern.
Teacher may have students work with a partner if extra assistance is
needed.

Assessment:
Observation of students.
Collecting graphic organizer that demonstrate student work.
