III. Procedure:
A. Motivation
1. I will gather the children at the rug area.
2. I will ask the children Who knows how to tie their shoes?
3. I will Why is keeping your shoes tied important? while the
demonstration of falling from untied shoe laces occurs. I will explain to
the children that falling can cause harmful injuries that can happen
both indoors and outdoors.

4. I will instruct the children to go back to their seats by the color of shoes
theyre wearing. EX: If you have black sneakers you may go back to
your seat.

3.

Steps
We will ask the children to work in groups of two.
We will give each group a sneaker thats already laced to work with.
We will instruct the children to make an X with the laces on the sneakers
and hold each end in the air.
4. We will show the children that the bottom of the X looks like a tunnel.
5. We will tell the children to take one side of the X and pull it through the
tunnel.
6. When one side of the X is through the tunnel, we will tell the children to
pull both ends tight, then let them drop.
7. We will tell the children to make one bunny ear, then pinch the bottom of it.
8. Then wrap the other side around the bunny ear and pull it through the
small tunnel creating another bunny ear.
9. We will tell the children to pull tight to reassure the laces are secure and
safe.
10. We will encourage the children to talk to one another and ask each other
for help first.
11. We will go around and assist the children if they need help and give them
positive reinforcement.
12. We will give the children crayons to color the sneaker the color(s) of their
choice.
13. After everyone has completed coloring their sneaker, we will ask the
children to join us at the rug area again.
IV. Conclusion:
We will have the children participate in the Lace Them Up song by Jakerah
Hamlin.
We get out of the way, then bend down low (starts clapping).
Grab both laces and tie them up slow.
Make our X, under the tunnel, one bunny ear then around we go.
Under the tunnel, pull the ears tight.
Stand up straight then take off flight.
V. Transition:
The children will one-by-one identify one step they learned to tie their shoe, and
then they may go back to their seats.
VI. Follow-Up Activities/Learning Centers:
1. We will leave the song used to conclude the lesson in the music center for the
children to utilize throughout the day.

practice lacing.
3. We will leave a book about shoelace safety in the reading center for the
children to utilize throughout the day.
