Science
Standards: State and/or Common Core
Identify the roles of producers, consumers and decomposers.
Subject(s) Food Chain
Prerequisite Knowledge:
Students know plants are the primary source of matter and energy
entering most food chains.
Students know producers and consumers are related in food
chain and food web. And may compete with each other for
resources in an ecosystem.
Content Describe in a paragraph. You can also add an outline.
Students will learn what a producer, consumer and decomposer role is in the food chain.
Producer: Plants are called producers. They produce their own food.
Consumer: Animals are called consumers. They cannot make their own food, so they eat plants
and animals
Decomposers: Bacteria and fungi are decomposers. They eat decaying matter such as dead plants
and animals
List the objectives for this lesson. They should include what the students will learn from your
instruction:
Students will be able to differentiate between producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Students will be able categorize species as a producer, consumer, or decomposers.
How will you teach the content? Details help. Include the game(s), what do you do before the
games and how do you follow-up.
Initiation: Students will be asked what it means to produce something. We will discuss the
meaning and come up with a class definition. Students will be asked what it means to consume
something. We will come up with a class definition. Students will be asked what it means to
decompose. After we discuss these meanings, I will then ask what role do they play in the food
chain. We will discuss different examples of each group and make a chart. Students will then
play the Producer, Consumer, Decomposer game. Students will play the game. After they play
the game, they will review their learning on the pages linked to the game. After completing the
game, students will complete a worksheet about Producers, Consumers and Decomposers.
Additional materials you will use and how will you use them.
Chart Paper to make an anchor chart with key definitions and examples.
Pictures of animals that can be used to categorize the different groups.
Colored pencils for drawing:
Worksheet
Evaluation Strategies
Students will be asked to use colored pencils to draw examples of producers, consumers and
decomposers on the worksheet. There will be a rubric for the worksheet.
