Is the seismic isolation system require to be fire protected under the relevant building code fire Ip
regulations or other building regulations specific tothe bulding use? An example of these
requirements can be found in Section 714.7 of the International Building Code (IBC) and the protection of
seismic systems. There are many instances where fire protection of the seismic isolation system may not
be required. Guidance on methods to assess the requirements are provided within Section 703.2 of the
IBC and Section 703.3 ofthe CBC. The specific requirements should be confirmed with the Authority
Having Jurisciction(AHJ)
If protection ofthe salemic isolator is required, one methad to determine the fire-resisting performance of
the system, isto have the isolator tested by @ Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) that is
certified by the State Fire Marshall Offic for that tasting. Testing will generally be undertaken in
‘accordance with ASTM E119 and any ather standards cited by the AHL
Tosting will determine ifthe solsmic isolation system meats the specifi fre-esistance requirements. If
the tasted system does not mest the specific requirements, additional protection measures such as
approved fire-ratod materials may be required to protect the systom [7 alternatively a fire engineering
assossmont undartaken by an accredited professional fir protection enginoer may be undertaken to
|usly the unprotected seismic isolation system [6
It testing the isolation system by @ NRT. demonstrate that the specific fr-resistance requirements are
‘met, then no further fre protection measures are required. It should be confirmed that there are no
‘ditional requirements by the AH that are specific to the particular building use.
[Another method of satisfying the fire protection ofthe seismic isolation system isto have a fre
‘engineoring assessment underlaken by an accredited professional fir protection engin
‘The fir engineering assessment may consider {uel loading, location and fire exposure of the islators
fir protection measures installed in the building and other relevant factors to rationalize the fre
protection measures requited to the isolators. A likely outcome from such an assessment is that no
additional fre protection measures would be required to achieve the required level of ro safety.
‘Another method to achieve the required fire protection ofthe seismic isolation system isto conceal the
system within an approved and appropriately teste fre-rated product, such as a gypsum board
enclosure, fie-rated fabric wrap or similar propritary system. It is important that whatever system is
selected fo achieve the necessary fire rating, will not impair the performance of the seismic isolator under
seismic leadings. Guidance can be provided by an accredited fre-protection enginesr on appropriate
systems suitable for protecting seismic isolating systems.
