1. Learning Outcome/Behavioral Objectives: Students will interpret and analyze


the song Ode to Joy using familiar musical terms describing key, melody, rhythm,
time, and shape. Students will perform it on soprano recorder as an ensemble.
2. Required Prior Knowledge and Skills: Basic knowledge and introduction of the
soprano recorder, proper hand positions, fingerings of notes GABDC. They have
already learned and performed the song Fais Do Do.
Anticipated needs: Pay attention to Eighth notes and dotted quarter notes in the
song to make sure they remember how long to hold out the note. Clap the
rhythm.

4. Assessment: Students answer questions about analysis and assess the music with
terms that have been covered in the past. Their performance and fingerings as
well as intonation and breathing can be assessed when they play it as an
ensemble.
5. Materials, Repertoire, Equipment needed: Soprano Recorders for each
individual.
6. Accommodations: (Potential)

Place students with visual/hearing difficulties closer to the front.

Speak slowly
Use visual and call and response techniques.

7. Lesson Sequence:
a. Activity: Activator/Warm Up. Assuming that they have already learned Hot
Cross Buns, play through Fais Do Do
Estimated Time: 1 min.
b. Activity: Review fingerings for notes GABCD
Estimated Time: 1 min.
b. Activity: Simple analysis of Ode to Joy
Estimated Time: 5 min.
d. Activity: Sing rhythm of Ode to Joy. Explain dotted quarter notes.
Estimated Time: 5 min
e. Activity: Teach Ode To Joy (Include introduction of Beethoven as a composer
in classical music)
Estimated Time: 8 min.
f. Activity: Rehearse song in groups of 3
Estimated Time: 5 min.
g. Activity: Perform the song
Estimated Time: 2 min
h. Activity: Summarizer/Foreshadowing, Adding new notes, F and F#.
Demonstrate fingering

8. Assignments: Analyze familiar form on the song and identify key, notes, melody,
rhythm, time, and shape.
Rehearse as a group and perform the song.
9. Contingency plan: Clap rhythm and say notes in rhythm. Review Orff
instrumental accompaniment for Fais Do do.
10. Evaluation/Diagnosis/Remediation: Discuss Beethoven as a composer briefly
and create a connection so the students are introduced to classical music.
