Job Shadow
For my job shadow I went too HNTB a Civil Engineering organization at Merrill
Lynch, an office building. I choose HMTB because of its reputation. HMTB earned its
early growth on a reputation of doing quality work and being direct, honest and
genuine in client dealings. What I did at the job shadow was mostly watching and
listening. I watched him work on a project that involved checking old bridge ratings.
I also participated in a meeting where they talked about upcoming projects. Merrill
Lynch was a five level office building. His office was small but professional with a
desk and a computer. The company has a total of twenty-four people and three
departments: Traffic, Bridges and Civil. The atmosphere was quiet but a busy quite.
In addition, the average employee there has smart and polite. As the day went by, I
saw how the company worked together and checked each others work. I would
have to say that the working atmosphere was what I expected. However, I did go on
a Friday so the atmosphere could be deferent then what I saw. My contact was
actually my dad so all I had to do was just plan it with him. He is a department
manager for the structure department. However, he started as a junior civil
engineer at Caltrans in California. He has worked at HMTB for four years. The office
manager offered him this position because he had 23 years of experience in the
civil engineering profession. His daily tasks include communication, meetings and
checking formulas. This career requires a bachelor in civil engineering. The
occupational outlook for this job is high. This is because civil engineers will always
and have been needed in a society. However, this job includes a variety of technical
problem solving. This job also takes a hardworking and patient person.
