11-1/11-2 Surfaces, Vertices, Edges/Plane Shapes-

VA SOL:
2.16 The student will identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane and solid geometric figures
(circle/sphere, square/cube, and rectangle/rectangular prism).
Content Objective(s):
-The learner will be able to identify solid figures by their faces or flat surfaces, edges, and vertices.
-TLWBAT identify the plane shapes that form the flat surfaces of solid figures.
Accommodations/

Assessment (based on objectives):
-Check workbook pages for correct answers

Materials:
-Solid shape blocks
-Workbook page 11-1
-Workbook page 11-2
-Fox shapes and speech bubbles
-Tape
-Toothpicks and marshmallow cube
-Paper
Integration of technology:

Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda):

Propose riddles:
-I am a shape. I have four equal sides. What am I?
-I am a shape. I have three sides. What am I?

Access/Review Prior Knowledge:

-Ask students to name shapes that they know, come to white board and draw
them.
-What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built):

-What Does the Shape Say?

Fox shapes are pre-made

Introduce shapes to the class using the fox shapes and matching blocks.

Have students raise hands to describe the shapes. Write key facts in the
fox shapes speech bubble

Include: Plane shape (2D) vs. Solid Shape (3D)

# of faces
# of vertices
# of edges/sides
Is it a polygon

To explain faces, vertices, and edges, have a cube made of toothpicks

and marshmallows.
Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding:
-Workbook page 11-1

Go over cover page together as a class using 3D blocks

1-2 blocks at each group. Group will discuss their block and share
information they have agreed upon with the class.

Students do the rest of the page on their own.

-Students get new 3D blocks at their table

Trace all faces onto a sheet of paper

Identify shapes (Plane shapes definition)

Share with the class, collect blocks

Independent Practice:
-Workbook page 11-2

Students do inside and back independently (#1-9)
