An important feature of a Roman Settlement

is the fact that it was walled off.


This was a defensive measure to keep nearby

people out or make it harder for them to get


in.

Since there was a wall around the settlement people

had to have places to get in and out of the city from.


There could be a varying number of gates that a city

could have.
In this example the city has 4 gates, bigger

settlements and city could have more.

One of the two main roads found in a Roman

Settlement.
This is the East-West road that is oriented to

the sunrise on September 23, the birthday of


Julius Caesar.

Cardo

Cardo
One of the two main roads found in a Roman

Settlement.
This is the North-South running road.
The Cardo and Decumanus would meet and at

its crossing point is where the Forum would


be.

Forum

Forum
The main meeting place in the camp.
It would have held the different marketplaces,

the tabularium, theater, and different temples.


It is normally located near where the Cardo

and Decumanus intersect.

Tabularium
Is a building that would be used for keeping

records

Is located in or near the Forum.
