Scope This standard forms the basis for-the stipulation of values for the general tolerances of rough castings. It shall also be consulted for the stipulation of dimensions with specified tolerances on drawings. General tolerances for angular dimensions on rough castings are not stipulated as there are no empirical values available on this subject. If particular degrees of accuracy are required for angles then they shall be toleranced. 2. Concepts 2.1 General casting tolerance series A general casting tolerance series is a series of tolerance values for untoleranced dimensions (dimensions without specified tolerances) and for dimensions with specified tolerances of rough castings of metallic materials, which are uniformly stipulated symmetrical to a zero line. 2.2 Degree of accuracy The degree of accuracy (see DIN 7182 Part 1) is formed for the individual groups of materials from one or more general casting tolerance series. Standards Committee on Casting (GINA) of DIN Standards Committee on Length and Shape (NIG) of DIN DIN 1680 Part 2 2.3 General tolerance See DIN 7182 Part 1 and DIN 1680 Part 1. 3. General casting tolerance Two groups of general casting tolerances are distinguished: - General casting tolerance group GTA The values of this group are derived from the ISO tolerance system, see Table 1. - General casting tolerance group GTB The values of this group are determined empirically on the basis of the trend curve of measurements, see Table 2. 4. Application 4,1 General casting tolerance In order to determine the general casting tolerances, the general tolerance series is selected from Table 1 or 2, the values of which correspond to the relevant features of the casting material group or of the manufacturing method. 4.2 Nominal dimension range In standards which contain general tolerances for rough castings made of specific materials, several nominal dimension ranges may be combined in the case of low nominal dimensions. This combination is recommended in particular in cases where, with small nominal dimensions, it is not technically possible to comply with the general casting tolerances according to Tables 1 and 2 corresponding to the selected degree of accuracy. In such cases, the general casting tolerance of the largest individual nominal dimension range shall be used for the combined nominal dimension range. DIN 1680 Part 2 4.3 Dimensions with specified tolerance If individual dimensions of a rough casting are dimensioned differently from the selected general casting tolerance series, then the tolerances applicable to the relevant nominal dimension ranges shall be selected from other general casting tolerance series according to Tables 1 and 2. 4.4 Restriction of the general casting tolerance In order to prevent uneconomically large or technically unfeasible deviations from occurring in practice for small nominal dimensions, the variation shall be restricted to @ maximum of +25 % of. the nominal dimension concerned. Even the values of the individual tolerance groups for the same nominal dimension range were therefore different for different casting materials. Comprehensive measurements have since demonstrated that it is possible to formulate a tolerance system which takes into account the particular characteristics of castings. This standard contains the general tolerance system for rough castings. Measurements in Germany, and also in other countries, have shown that for a number of casting materials the nominal dimension deviations correspond approximately to the IT series of the ISO tolerance system; for other casting materials, however, they are higher in the lower nominal dimension ranges and lower in the higher nominal dimension ranges than the IT series. This general tolerance system takes this fact into consideration by stipulating two general casting tolerance groups. In Table 1, for nominal dimensions over 3 up to and including 500 mm, the values of the general casting tolerance group A are derived similarly to DIN 7151 from the multiples of the tolerance unit i = 0.45°/D+0.001 D, and for nominal dimensions exceeding 500 mm in accordance with DIN 7172 from the multiples of the tolerance unit i= 0.004 D +-2.1. In consideration of the practical factors in the manufacture of rough castings, intermediate series have also been included which are stipulated as the geometrical average of two IT series. DIN 1680 Part 2 In the nominal dimension ranges up to 250 mm the calculated values were not rounded off for the general casting tolerance series GTA 12 to 14. For the general casting tolerance series GTA 12 to 14 in the nominal dimension ranges over 250 mm and for the other general casting tolerance series in all nominal dimension ranges, the tabular values have been rounded off in relation to the calculated values, using the following rounding rule: culated | Rounded value | | Jusp valve Tee figure | fem up to 2 | 1.0 to.9 On 6 over 2 t0.10 |G 02 Boon over 10 to 20 | 0t09 1 over 20 t0100 | 0:2;4:6;8 over 100 ° 10 The values of Table 2 are determined empirically on the basis of the trend curve of measurements concerning dimension deviations on rough castings. They were plotted as uniformly rising groups of curves in general casting tolerance series. The resultant values for the nominal dimension ranges were rounded off like the values of Table 1. The differing rate of rise of the general tolerances of groups ‘A and B is shown in the diagram: feral tolerance == « Nonins1 éimension —— DIN 1680 Part 2 When using general tolerances for rough castings allowance shall be made for the fact that numerous influences prejudice the manufacture and therefore increase the difficulty of adhering to dimensions. The casting shape, material group, casting condition, type of pattern and pattern accuracy, cores, foundry apparatus etc. have the effect that individual castings do not consistently follow a theoretical system. For this reason it has been decided for the present time not to include in the standard any reference to a correlation between degrees of accuracy and castings. The Association of German Foundry Technicians (VDG) has however agreed to provide results of research in the forseeable future with the aim of stipulating or recommending the allocation of degrees of accuracy. It is still too early to say whether it will be possible to include these results in standards at a later date. This re-issue takes into account the amendment of the concept "undimensioned tolerance” to "general tolerance" and the restriction of the permissible dimensional deviation to a maximum of +25 % of the respective nominal dimension.
