Unit Plan Title

All About the Ocean

Curriculum-Framing Questions

Goals

The students will be able to name and describe the oceans


and the different aspects of it. They will be able to describe
the different animals that live in the ocean along with the
food chains that they belong to. The students will also be
able to use cardinal and relative directions to explain the
locations of the oceans and continents.

Content Questions

What are the names of the 5 oceans? Where are the oceans
located? What are some of the animals and plants found in
the ocean? How do the different plants and animals in the
ocean interact with each other?

Unit Summary

Through this Ocean Unit the students will learn all about the ocean. They will learn the
different oceans, where they are located relative to the continents, and the different animals
and food chains found in the ocean.

Match the appropriate food source and habitat for a variety of animals (e.g.,

English Language Arts Objectives:


TSW complete a journal writing about a time they have been to the ocean, or what they think
the ocean would be like (if they have not visited the ocean before). TSW participate in rug
time, reading books about the ocean and talking about what they know and what they would
like to know. TTW create an inspiration map with the students with what they know about the
ocean and what they would like to know. TSW read books about the ocean and complete a
fotobabble about something they learned about the ocean from that book.
Science Objectives:
The students will be able to talk about the different plants and animals in the ocean and how
they each interact with each other and with the sun.
Social Studies Objectives:
Students will be able to identify and label all seven continents and all four oceans. They will
also be able to use cardinal and relative directions to describe the locations of oceans and
continents in relation to each other.

Prerequisite Skills

The students will need to have a basic knowledge of using computers such and using the
internet. They will need to have knowledge of the cardinal directions. They will also need to
know how to read and write in a journal.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction

Resource Student

To accommodate these students we will work directly with


them with more one on one time together. These students will
also be put into groups so that students with different ability
levels can work together to help each other.

Non-Native English
Speaker

To accommodate these students they will also work in groups


of different ability levels, have the lesson translated into their
native language, and also have translators on stand by if they
are needed.

To accommodate these students there will be extra activities


for them to do if they finish earlier than the other students,
they will also be given a little more advanced activity for them
