MCGRAW HOUSE Rachel Mecalianos Residents at the McGraw were at a high level of functioning that permitted them to lead independent, active lives. For example, many of the residents volunteered for the secretary during the week so she can have alunch break. This positively influenced residents that did this because they were able to fulfilled their societal contribution. Likewise, because they were cognitively intact, they were able to read and write poetry together, and participate in book clubs. This positively contributed to the group because Itallowed them to be social, while participating in an occupation they are passionate about. The occupations previously listed allow people to be social. For example, one resident used to competitively bowl, and can no longer do that due to health reasons, and that’s why Wii bowling provides a positive outlook for meaningful occupations / Likewise, the person | had interviewed had always enjoyed Writing, and continued to do write poetry and share What she had Written in the poetry group. This waSa prime example Of an occupation that was Intrinsically gratifying. The women | interviewed was close to 90 years old, and had suffered a serious of heart problems. But that did not limit her from being independent. She moved to Ithaca to be closer to one of her daughter, but her other children were scattered across the country. Being in a facility like the McGraw house has allowed her to keep her independence, while make new friends and create a new social circle. She loves reading, so she is an active member of the book club, and also writes poetry. She started writing later in life because that was something that always interested her. She also brings flowers to the nursing home because she enjoys helping others; which is a meaningful occupation she has participated in throughout her lifetime. p i! This could have been due to her not feeling well. and coping with moving into a new home. Likewise, some of the younger residents feel bingo is an “old people's game” and that OMe CSC LESS Cine n rare rcins “old people” and growing older. There is nota set cafeteria; residents have stoves and full kitchens that were redone recently to accommodate for safety issues. Likewise, there is an activity room with a treadmill, small television, Wii, and table room. There is also a laundry room, as well as multiple “libraries” and lounges on each floor of the Mctraw house. There is also a beautiful garden on the rooftop. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT The rooftop permits residents to garden, eliminating the need for a yard. This is a positive part of the physical environment because it allows people to engage in the occupations they love. The activity room being ina long, narrow hallway at the back of the building negatively impacts peoples occupations because if someone has a walker or wheelchair, they may feel that the hallway is too small for them to. get to the activity room comfortably. SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT By having libraries on each floor this isa positive impact on socialization because it allows residents to go to acommon area and interact with people that live on the same floor as them, as they engage in a common occupation; which in this instance would be reading. A negative impact would be the lack ‘one common occupation to bring all the residents together to socialize. In CCRC's meal times are usually the time residents can socialize at the cafeteria. At the moment, some of the top shelves are not utilized because residents can't reach and do not want to risk falling while using a step ladder. It people do not have a balance of occupations it negatively impacts their overall psychological health and well being. People need to engage in occupations that provide Societal contribution, are Intrinsically Gratifying, provide Interpersonal Relatedness, while maintaining their self-care and self-maintenance in order to maintain a balance of well-being. Likewise, activities at McGraw house allow residents to be social, and make friends with other residents that they would normally not spend time with. The McGraw house also provides an outlet of volunteer activities so residents feel they are giving back.
