Is God Missing or We Just Cant Count on Him?
Many years ago, in a dark time an event called the Holocaust occurs. The Holocaust was
an event where millions of Jewish people and others were murdered by the Nazi government,
and today consider to be the largest genocide in modern history. The book Night is written by
the author Elie Wiesel. At the age of 15, Elie Wiesel and his family were taken and deported to
Auschwitz by the Hungarians and German SS and the police. There Elie was separated from his
mother and little sister. Elie then spent his years in the concentration camp working with his
father. Life in concentration camp was hard, they had little food to eat, and they had to work all
day long. Soon everyone else who had survive were rescued by Russian and American troops. In
this book, Elie Wiesel thought that God could not help the thousands of kid kill by the Nazi,
where was God when the Jews were being hang, and that God is a coward who let down the
people who needs help.
First, God is not reliable when it comes to helping the jewish people because he has let them
down too many times. Blessed be Gods name? Why, but why would I bless Him? every fiber in
me rebelled. Because he caused thousand of children to burn in His mass graves(Wiesel 69). In
this quote Elie is having a conflict in his mind saying why would he bless God when all God ever
done was let innocent childrens die in the hand of the Nazi soldiers. By reading this quote, readers
can tell that Elie Wiesel is upset in his mind because God could not even help out the little children
. Elie Wiesel was fifthteen years of age when all this happen, reader could argue that fifthteen

Comment [R1]: The examples in this thesis

are vague, abstract, and immediately
problematic. Rather than focus on clear, strong
examples, Aaron uses nebulous ideas that will
ultimately lead to summary rather than
purposeful analysis. Compare this to his
Enders Game thesis: The novel is anti-war
because kids are bully other kids, turning
innocent little kids into violent men, and thinking
that the buggers are a real threat to the Earth
even though they harmless. The same issue
exists in both essays.

is a mature age, but who wants to be fifteenth and witness so many deaths in front of them.
Elie might of been fifteenth but he not ready to witness thousands of death right in front of him.
Second, God is the sole creator of humanity and yet he let his creation die to the evil
hands of the Nazi. God should not betray his people like that, its not right to let a young one die
and knowing that the people around them cant help. But the third rope was still moving the
child, too light, was still breathingBehind me, I heard the same man asking: For Gods sake,
where is God? And from within me, I heard a voice answer: Where He is? This is where-hanging
here from this gallows(65). What have God done, how can he just do nothing while an
innocent boy was dying. Elie is beginning to lost faith in his religion and in God himself, hes is
wants to know where is God, why cant God help them. God is let down humanity even if he
made it. God can not be trusted ever.
Third, God is just a coward. Master of the universe more like master of nothing. God is a

Comment [R2]: There is not much analysis

here and he tends to repeat the same thing. He
doesnt connect it back to the thesis that Elie
lost his faith in God. However, he at least
attempts some sort of new, interesting thought
about how Elies age ties into the horror he
sees. Compare this to a body paragraph in his
Enders Game essay:
First, in Ender's Game kids are bullying other
kids. In one of the scenes in the book where a
boy named Stilson is picking on Ender because
he was just a third child. As stated, "Hey, Third,
hey, turd, you flunked out, huh? Thought you
were better than us, but you lost your little
birdie, Thirdie, got a bandaid on you neck."
(Card 6). This shows that Stilson picks on Ender
because Stilson calls him a Third, a turd, and
also making fun of him because Ender got his
monitor taken off, making Ender think he's
useless.
This is pure summary, no attempt at higher level
thought whatsoever. Therefore, there was an
improvement, if only slight.
Comment [R3]: Aaron just summarizes the
quote instead of analyzing or clarifying it.
However, again, there is the attempt to bring in
a new thought about God letting humanity down
despite the fact that He created it.

disgrace, letting so many younglings die, let the Nazis do anything they want. God is not
reliable. What are You, my God? I thought angrily. How do You compare to this stricken mass
gathered to affirm to You their faith, their anger, their defiance? What does Your grandeur mean,
Master of the Universe, in the face of all the this cowardice, this decay, and this misery? Why do
you go on troubling these poor peoples wounded minds, their ailing bodies(66). Elie is saying
that he dont God being his God because he had let down so many people and making them
miserable. Elie gets really made about God so he called God a coward because God did not even
help innocent people who were getting killed by the Nazis. God has a lot of deaths on his hand.

In the book Night, Elie Wiesel thought that God could not help the thousands of kid kill by the
Nazi, where was God when the Jews were being hang, and that God is a coward who let down

Comment [R4]: This paragraph suffers the

same issues. There is no one, clear example in
the paragraph so it ends up being a jumble of
ideas.

when they need him most? Are humanity important to him? After all he created humanity.
