Giving Blood

Giving blood is a very unselfish act that can result in the life of someone else
being saved. Many resources collect blood all year long in order to make sure t
here is a good supply of it. You never know when there will be a major crisis th
at depletes the supply of blood collected. The supplies on hand were very small
after all of the efforts to help those after the terrorist attacks of September
11th, 2001.
Some people are only interested in giving blood so that they can make a little b
it of money. Some locations will pay for a certain amount of money and people ca
n donate on a regular basis. Those that have a rare blood time that is in high d
emand will often find they get paid more for giving blood than those that have a
very common blood type.
Many college students find this to be a good way to have some extra spending cas
h. Before anyone can give blood though they have to be screened. Not everyone is
accepted to be a donor. Those that test positive for particular medical ailment
s such as HIV won t be allowed to do so. With mobile establishments the blood is t
aken but then later tested and discarded if such ailments are present.
Sometimes there are advertisements for blood drives at particular locations. The
se often take place in mobile centers that have all of the necessities in order
to take the blood donations. They may be offered in conjunction with community e
vents or sponsored by local hospitals. There is generally information circulatin
g in the weeks before the blood drive in order to educate people about it. The m
ore the public understands about the need for blood the more likely they are to
donate it.
The process of giving blood is one that doesn t take very long. Yet it is somethin
g you can do for others without costing you anything but a few minutes of your t
ime. This is a great way to help ensure society has what it needs to take care o
f those who need it. You may one day need a blood transfusion yourself and will
be grateful that people have taken the time to be so generous.
