REMOVE 2 BRACKETS AND GROMMETS Remove the bolt and nut. 16, REMOVE MANUAL STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY Remove the gear assembly from the RH side of the vehicle.SR-65 STEERING — MANUALSTEERING GEAR Matchmarks DISASSEMBLY NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it. 1, SECURE MANUAL STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY IN VISE Using SST, secure the gear assembly in a vise. SST 09612-00012 2, REMOVE RH AND LH TIE ROD ENDS AND LOCK NUTS (a) Place matchmarks on the tie rod end and rack end. (b) Loosen the lock nut. 3. REMOVE RH AND LH CLIPS, RACK BOOTS AND CLAMPS: Using a screwdriver, loosen the clamp. NOTICE: + Be careful not to damage the boot. . Mark the RH and LH boots. 4, REMOVE RH AND LH RACK ENDS AND CLAW WASHERS (@) Using @ screwdhiver and a hammer, stake back the wash- er. NOTICE: Avoid any impact on the rack. (b) Using a spanner to hold the steering rack steadily and us- ing SST, remove the rack end. SST 09922-10010 NOTICE: . Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown in th lustration. . Mark the RH and LH rack ends, 5. REMOVE ADJUSTING BOLT LOCK NUTSR-66 Pinion Bearing Adjusting Screw Lock Nut — Vinyl Tape Pinion Bearing STEERING — MANUALSTEERING GEAR 6. REMOVE ADJUSTING BOLT Using a hexagon wrench (4 mm), remove the bolt. 7. REMOVE RACK GUIDE SPRING COVER, O-RING, RACK GUIDE SPRING, RACK GUIDE SPRING SPACER, RACK GUIDE AND RACK GUIDE SEAT (a) Remove the 2 bolts. (b) Memove the seat from the guide. 8. REMOVE PINION BEARING ADJUSTING SCREW LOCK NUT Using SST, remove the nut. SST 09922-10010 NOTICE: Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown in the illustra- tion. 9. REMOVE PINION BEARING ADJUSTING SCREW (a) To prevent oil seal lip damage, wind viny| tape on the ser- rated part of the steering pinion. (b) Using SST, remove the screw. SST 09612-24014 (09616-10020) 10. REMOVE STEERING PINION WITH BEARING (a) Fully pull the steering rack from the pinion housing side of the rack housing and align the rack cutout portion will the pinion. (b) Remove the pinion with the bearing from the rack hous- ing. 41. REMOVE STFFRING RACK Remove the rack from the rack housing without revolving it. NOTICE: Remove the rack from the steering pinion housing side of the rack housing.SR-67 STEERING — MANUALSTEERING GEAR Dial Indicator 4 INSPECTION NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it. 1 (a) @) (b) INSPECT STEERING RACK Using a dial indicator, check the rack for runout and for teeth wear and damage. Maximum runout: 0.30 mm (0.0118 in.) Check the back surface for wear and damage. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE BEARING Using SST, remove the bearing from the steering pinion. SST 09950-40010 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04010, 09954-04010, 09955-04030, 09958-04010) Coat a new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Using SST, press in the bearing. SST 09612-24014 (09612-10061) IF NECESSARY, REPLACE BEARING Heat the rack housing to above 80°C (176°F). Using plastic hammer, tap oul the bearing from the rack. housing. Coat a new bearing with molybdenum disutfide tithlum base grease. Heat the rack housing to above 80°C (176°F). Using SST, press in the bearing. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00350), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)SR-68 ssT Oil Seal Proos ssi 4 | Oi Seal ‘= Omm (Qin) STEERING — MANUALSTEERING GEAR 4 (a) (b) (ce) (@) IF NECESSARY, REPLACE BUSHING Using a screwdriver, loosen the 3 claws of the bushing, and remove the bushing from the rack housing. Coat a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Install the bushing into the rack housing, making sure to align into the 3 holes. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE OIL SEAL Using SST and a hammer, tap out the oil seal from the pin jon bearing adjusting screw. SST 09950-0010 (09951-00240), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) Coat a new oil seal lip with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Using SST, press in the oil seal. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00240), 09850-70010 (09951-07100) NOTICE: Make sure to install the oil seal facing the correct directionSR-69 STEERING — MANUALSTEERING GEAR Steering ool Cutout Portion Vinyl Tape Pinion Bearing Adiustina screw =e REASSEMBLY NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it. 1, COAT WITH MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE LITHIUM BASE GREASE (See page SR-61) 2. INSTALL STEERING RACK Install the rack into the rack housing NOTICE: To avoid damaging the bushing, install the rack from the steering pinion side of the rack housing without revolving 3. INSTALL STEERING PINION (a) Set the steering rack notched side so that the pinion can be positioned inside. (b) Line up the cutout portion of the rack with the pinion. (c) Make sure that the pinion end is securely located in the bearing. NOTICE: Do not engage the pinion teeth with the rack teeth. 4, _ INSTALL PINION BEARING ADJUSTING SCREW (a) To prevent oil seal lip damage, wind vinyl tape on the ser- raled parl of the steering pinion, (b) Apply sealant to 2 or 3 threads of the screw. Sealant: Part No. 08833-00080, THREE BOND 1344, 1 OCTITE 249 or equivalent () Using SST, temporarily install the screw. SST 09612-24014 (09616-10020)Adjusting Screw Pinion Bearing Adjusting Screw Lock Nut / STEERING — MANUALSTEERING GEAR 5. ADJUST PINION PRELOAD (a) Using SST and a torque wrench, tighten the pinion bear- ing adjusting screw until the preload matches the specifi cation. SST 09612-24014 (09616-10010, 09616-10020) Preload (turning): 0.4 N-m (3.7 kgf-cm, 3.2 in.1bf) HINT: Do not engage the pinion teeth with the rack teeth. (b) Using SST and a torque wrench, loosen the screw until the preload is within specification SST 09612-24014 (09616-10010, 09616-10020) Preload (turning): 0.15 ~ 0.25 Nom (1.5 ~ 2.5 kgf-cm, 1.3 ~ 2.2 in.1bf) 6. INSTALL PINION BEARING ADJUSTING SCREW Lock NUT Apply sealant to 2 or 3 threads of the nut Sealant: Part No. 08833-00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent Using SST to stop the pinion bearing adjusting screw ro- laling, and torque the nut SST 09612-24014 (09616-10020), 0022 10010 Torque: 85 N-m (871 kgf-cm, 63 ft-Ibf) NOTICE: Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown tion. HINT: + Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 380 mm (14.96 in) + Donot engage the pinion teeth with the rack teeth (0) Recheck the pinion preload. Preload (turning): 0.15 - 0.25 N-m (1.5 - 2.5 kgt-om, 1.3 - 2.2 In.-Ibf) INSTALL RACK GUIDE SEAT, RACK GUIDE, RACK GUIDE SPRING SPACER, RACK GUIDE SPRING, O-RING AND RACK GUIDE SPRING COVER (a) _ Install the seat to the guide. (a) (b) (ce) HINT ADJUST TOTAL PRELOAD Engage the pinion teeth with the rack teeth and locate the rack in the center position. To prevent the steering rack teeth from damaging the oil seal lip, temporarily install the RH and LH rack ends. Temporarily install the adjusting bolt and adjusting bolt lock nut. Leave the lock nut sufficiently loose. (w) (e) (9) HINT: Fix the steering gear in @ vise su thal the adjusting bolt faces straight up. Using a hexagon wrench (4 mm), torque the adjusting bolt. Torque: 4.9 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 43 in..Ibf) Using SST, rotate the steering pinion shatt to operate the steoring rack 2 or 3 times through its full stroke. SST 09612-24014 (09616-10010) Firmly fix the dial indicator in position so that the dial indi- cator tip touches the top of the steering rack, as shown in the illustration. Fix the magnetic stand of the dial indicator on the rack housing Use a lavel tip for the dial indicatar tipsR-72 STEERING — MANUAL STEERING GEAR (h) Using a hexagon wrench (4mm), gradually loosen the ad- justing bolt and adjust the twist of the steering rack to 0.06 mm (0.0024 in.) or less when the rack is twisted clockwise and counterclockwise by SST and torque wrench with 7.8 N-m (80 kgf-cm, 69 in-Ibf) of torque applied, SST 09922-10010 NOTICE: Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown in the illustra- tion. HINT: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 250 mm (9.84 in.). Using SST to rotate the steering pinion shaft, adjust the twist of the rack so that itis within the above specifications at the follow- ing 5 points. SST 09612-24014 (09616-10010) (1) Steering rack at center position. (2) _ Steering pinion shaft rotated 90° clockwise from the center position, (3) Steering pinion shaft rotated 90° counterclockwise from the center position. (4) Steering pinion shaft rotated 180° clockwise from the center position. (5) Steering pinion shaft rotated 180° counterclock- wise from the center position. SST 09612-24014 (09616-10010) Preload: 0.7 - 1.6 Nem (7.0 - 16.5 kgf-om, 6.0 - 14.3 in.-Ibf) NOTICE: The total preload must be within the specification through- out the steering rack’s full stroke. If it is not within the specification, adjust the backlash again. 10. INSTALL RH AND LH CLAW WASHERS AND RACK ENDS. Install a new claw washer, and temporarily install the rack end. HINT: Align the claws ot the washer with the steering rack grooves. (a) (b) Using a spanner to hold the steering rack steadily, and us- ing SST torque the rack end SST 09922-10010 Torque: 62 N-m (636 kgf-cm, 46 ft-bf) NOTICE: Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown in the illustra- tion. HINT: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 380 mm (14.96 in). ()__Using a brass bar and a hammer, stake the washer. NOTICE: Avoid any impact on the rack.SR-74 STEERING — MANUAL STEERING GEAR 11. INSTALL RH AND LH RACK BOOTS, CLAMPS AND CLIPS (a) Make sure that the steering rack hole is not clogged with grease. HINT: If the hole is clogged, the pressure inside the boot will change aiter it is assembled and the steering wheel is turned. (b) Install the boot. NOTICE: Be careful not to damage or twist the boots. () Using SST, tighten the clamp as shown in the illustration. SST 09521 24010 12. INSTALL RH AND LH TIE ROD ENDS AND LOCK NUTS (a) Screw the lock nut and tie rod end onto the rack end until the matchmarks are aligned. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNT BRACKET (a) A134L AT and A132L A/T: Torque the 2 bolts. Torque: 78 N-m (790 kgf-cm, 57 ft-lbf) (b) MT and A240L AIT: Torque the 3 bolts. Torque: 78 N-m (790 kgf-cm, 57 ft-lbf) 4, INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNT INSULATOR Torque the bolt. Torque: 87 N-m (890 kgf-cm, 64 ft-Ibf) 5. INSTALL FRONT SUB-FRAME AND LOWER SUS- PENSION ARM Torque the 14 bolts and 3 nuts. Torque: Bolt A: 61 N-m (620 kgf-cm, 45 ft bf) Bolt B: 64 N-m (650 kgf-cm, 47 ftlbf) Bolt C: 225 N.m (2,305 kgf.cm, 167 ftibf) Bolt D: 147 N-m (1,500 kgf-cm, 109 ft-lbf) Bolt E: 175 N-m (1,790 kgf-om, 129 ft-lbf) Nut : 57 N-m (580 kgf-cm, 42 ftlbf) 6. REMOVE PS GEAR ASSEMBLY Remove the gear assembly from the NH side of the vehicle. NOTICE: Do not damage the turn pressure tubes.SR-82 STEERING - POWER STEERING GEAR. DISASSEMBLY NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it. 1, SECURE POWER STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY IN VISE Using SST, secure the gear assembly in a vise. SST 09612-00012 2. REMOVE RACK HOUSING CAPSR-83 STEERING — POWER STEERING GEAR 10. REMOVE SELF-LOCKING NUT Using SST to stop the control valve shaft rotating, remove the nut. (c)_ Remove the oil seal and bearing from the valve assembly. 12, REMOVE BEARING Using a brass bar and a hammer, tap out the bearing from the rack housing. 13, REMOVE CYLINDER END STOPPER Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring trom the rack hous- ing 14, REMOVE STEERING RACK AND OIL SEAL (a) Using a brass bar, tap out the rack with the oil seal. (v) Remove the vil seal from the rack, Oil Seal "Steenng Huck Fs 15, REMOVE OIL SEAL Using SST and a hammer, drive out the oil seal. CHECK CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY AND BUSHING Using a cylinder gauge and a micrometer, measure the inside diameter of the bushing and outside diameter of the valve as- sembly. Maximum inside diameter: 28.20 mm (1.1102 in.) Minimum outside diameter: 27.75 mm (1.0925 in.) 3. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE BUSHING AND OIL SEAL (a) Using SST, remove the bushing from the rack housing. SST 09612-24014 (09613-22011) NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the rack housing. HINI + Separate the SST as shown in the illustration to use it. . As shown in the illustration, from the opposile side of SST confirm that its claw is firmly caught on the bushing. () Using a screwdriver, tap out the oll seal from the rack housing. NOTICE: To prevent rack housing damage, wind vinyl tape on the screwdriver.SR-85 STEERING — POWER STEERING GEAR (©) Goat a new oil seal lip with power steering fluid (d)__ Using SST, press in the oil seal. NOTICE: Make sure to install the oil seal facing the correct direction. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00230, 09951-00340, a9952—N6N10), 09950-7n010 (09951-07100) (e) Coat a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. (f) Using SST, press in the bushing. SST 09960-60010 (09951-00280, 09951-00350, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) 4, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TEFLON RING AND O- RING (a) Using a screwdriver, remove the teflon ring and O-ring from the steering rack NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the groove for the teflon ring. (b) Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it. (c) Expand a new teflon ring with your fingers. NOTICE: Be careful not lo overexpand the ring. (4) Goat the ring with power steering tluta. (e) _ Install the ring to the steering rack and settle it down with your fingers.SR-86 = Screw Extractor STEERING - POWER STEERING GEAR. () Carefully slide the tapered end of SST over the ring until the ring fits to the steering rack. SST 09630-24014 (09631-24031) NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ring. 5. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TEFLON RINGS (a) Using a screwdriver, remove the 4 rings from the control valve assembly. NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the grooves for the ring. (b) Expand 4 new teflon rings with your fingers. NOTICE: Be careful not to overexpand the ring. (c) Goat the rings with power steering fluid. (d) Install the rings to the control valve assembly, and settle them down with your fingers. (e) Carefully slide the tapered end of SST over the rings until the rings fit to the steering rack SST 09631-20081 NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the rings. 6. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE UNION SEATS (a) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 union seatsSR-87 STEERING — POWER STEERING GEAR (b) Using an extension bar and a hammer, tap in 2 new union seals.
