Failure to carry out service operation in the correct se~ quence could cause the SRS to unexpectedly deploy during servicing, possibly leading to a serious accident. Before servicing (including removal or installation of parte, inspection or re- placement), be sure to read the precautionary notices in the RS section. INSPECT DRIVE BELT Visually check the belt for excessive wear, frayed cords etc, It any detect has been found, replace the drive belt. HINT: Cracks on the rib side of a belt are considered acceptable. If the: esr] Missing chunks from the ribs are found on the belt, it should be replaced, 2. CHECK DRIVE BELT TENSION Measure the drive belt deflection. "AC Compressor Pulley Crank Pulley SR-4 lecaaa) dacaarl lana CORRECT WRONG WRONG STEERING — DRIVE BELT HINT: + "New belt” refers to a belt which has been used less than 5 minutes on a running engine. + "Used belt” refers to a belt which has been used on a run- ning engine for 5 minutes or more. + After installing @ belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves. + Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the groove on the bottom of the pulley. + Aller installing a new bell, run the engine for about 5 min- utes and recheck the belt tension. (Reference) = Using a belt tension gauge, measure the drive belt ten- sion Drive belt tension (ALL Models): 2E, 4E-FE, 2C, 2C-E Engine: New Belt: 686 ~ 785 N (70 - 80 kgf) Used Belt: 294 — 441 N (30 - 45 kgf) 4A-F, 4A-FE, 5A-FE, 7A-FE Engine: New Belt: 441 - 539 N (45 - 55 kaf) Used Belt: 245 — 392 N (25 — 40 kgf) If the belt tension is not as specified, adjust it. 3. 2E, 4E-FE Engine: ADJUST DRIVE BELT TENSION (a) Loosen the bolts A and B. (b) Loosen the lock nuts D and E. (c) Adjust adjusting bolt F so that its protrusion above nut C is = Omm (0in). (d) Fix nut C by tightening lock nut D. CORRECT nm mo0 WRONG SRS STEERING —_DAIVE BELT () Push up the PS pump hody so that there is no free play in the belt. Tum adjusting bolt F to obtain the correct belt tension as specified above. NOTICE: Make sure that the pump body and nut C are positioned cor- rectly as shown in the illustration, before turning bolt F to. adjust the belt tension. (f) Torque the bolt A. Torque: 43 N.m (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft-lbf) (g) Torque the boll B. Torque: 43 N-m (440 kaf-cm, 32 ft-lbf) (h) Loosen adjusting bolt F by 4 or 5 tums. NOTICE: Check that there is a gap of 5 mm (0.20 in. or more between the tip of nut C and the pump body. (i) Fix adjusting bolt F by tightening lock nut E. () Recheck the belt tension SR-6 STEERING — POWER STEERING FLUID POWER STEERING FLUID BLEEDING 1. CHECK FLUID LEVEL (See page SR-7) 2, JACK UP FRONT OF VEHICLE AND SUPPORT IT WITH STANDS 3. TURN STEERING WHEEL With the engine stopped, tum the wheel slowly from lock to lock several times. 4. LOWER VEHICLE 5. START ENGINE Run the engine at idle for a few minutes. 6. TURN STEERING WHEEL (a) With the engine idling, tum the wheel to left or right full lock position and keep it there for 2-3 seconds, then turn the wheel to the opposite full lock position and keep it there for 2-8 seconds, (b) Repeat (a) several times. 7. STOP ENGINE 8 CHECK FOR FOAMING OR EMULSIFICATION If the eystem has to be bled twice specifically because of foam- ing or emulsification, check for fluid leaks in the system. 9. CHECK FLUID LEVEL (See page SR-7) SR7 STEERING — POWER STEERING FLUID 2E, 4E-FE, 20, 20-£: INSPECTION TH 1. CHECK FLUID LEVEL o — (a) Keep the vehicle level. 4 (b) With the engine stopped, check the fluid level in the oil reservoir. If necessary, add fluid. Fluid: ATF DEXRON® Il or Ill HINT: Check that the fluld level is within the HOT LEVEL range on the reservoir / reservoir cap dipstick. If the fluid is cold, check that itis within the COLD LEVEL range. (c) Start the engine and run it at idle. (d) Tum the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to boost fluld temperature. Fluid temperature: 80°C (176°F) (e) Check for foaming or emulsification. If there is foaming or emulsification, bleed power steering eys- tem. (See page SR-6) (f) With the engine idling, measure the fluid level in the oil = reservotr. (g) Slop the engine. (h) Wait a few minutes and remeasure the fluid level in the oil », reservoir. Maximum fluid level rise: 5 mm (0.20 in.) (a) (b) CHECK STEERING FLUID PRESSURE Disconnect the pressure feed tube from the PS vane pump. (See page SR-31, SR-43 and SR-53). Connect SST, as shown in the illustration below. Check that the engine rpm decreases when the vacuum hose of the air control valve is pinched. Check that the engine rpm increases when the hose is re- leased, SR-11 STEERING — STEERING WHEEL Maximum Freeplay STEERING WHEEL INSPECTION 1. CHECK STEERING WHEEL FREEPLAY With the vehicle stopped and tires facing straight ahead, rock the steering wheel gently back and forth with light finger pres- sure, Freeplay should not exceed the maximum. Maximum freeplay: 30 mm (1.18 in.) 2. CHECK STEERING EFFORT (a) Center the steering wheel. (b) Remove the steering wheel pad. (See page SR-16) (©) Start the engine and run it at idle (4) Measure the steering effort in both directions. Reference: 7.8 N-m (80 kgf-om, 69 in.-Ibf) HINT: Take the tire type, pressure and contact surface into consider- ation before making your diagnosis. (e) Torque the steering wheel set nut. Torque: 34 N-m (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft-lbf) (f) Install the steering wheel pad. INSTALL MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY AND LOWER BUSHING (a) _ Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring to the shaft assembly. (b) Install the shaft assembly into the column tube, (c) Coat a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. (4) Using SST and a hammer, tap in the bushing. SST 09612-22011 (e) Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring to the shaft assembly. 3. Tilt Steering Column: INSTALL TILT LEVER ASSEMBLY AND BREAK AWAY BRACKET (a) _ Install the break away bracket HINT: Install the bracket so that its bridge comes to the back of the tube surface stopper (b) Install the No.1 tit lever lock bolt, tt lever assembly and tilt sub lever. HINT: Align the holes of the break away bracket and projections ot the tilt sub lever and No.1 tilt lever lock bolt. SR-24 STEERING — STEERING COLUMN (©) Torque the lock nut by turning it counterclockwise. Torque: 12 N-m (125 kgf-cm, 9 ftlbf) HINT: While tilting up the steering column, fix the tit lever to the high- est position and tighten the nut (d) Install the tilt support No.1 reinforce with the bolt. Torque: 5.4 N-m (55 kgf-cm, 48 in.-Ibf) HINT Align the reinforce and nut to eliminate looseness by turning the reinforce counterclockwise a fille, then lorque the bol (e) Install the torsion spring. 4, INSTALL 2 ENERGY ABSORBING PLATES (a) Install the break away capsule. (b) Install the energy absorbing guide and absorbing plate. (©) Install the new energy absorbing clip. 5. _ Non-tilt Steering Column: INSTALL COLUMN TUBE SUPPORT NOTICE: If the attachment or support is deformed, replace it with a new one. (a) _ Install the tube attachment to the tube support. (b) _ Install the support. NOTICE: Make sure to install the support facing the correct direc- tion. (See page SR-12) () Torque the bolt. Torque: 20 N-m (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf) NOTICE: + Tighten the bolt while holding the support to prevent it tuning too. Be sure to tighten the bolt with the specified torque. Tilt Steering Column: INSTALL TILT STEERING SUPPORT (a) _ Install the 2 No.1 support collars to the tilt steering sup- port (b) _ Install the tilt steering support to the column tube. (c) Install a new pawl set bolt and plate washer. (d) Torque a new lock nut. Torque: 9.5 N-m (97 kgf-cm, 84 in.-Ibf) SR-25 STEERING — STEERING COLUMN 7. INSTALL COLUMN UPPER BRACKET AND COLUMN UPPER CLAMP Tighten the 2 new tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off. 8, INSTALL NO.2 INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (a) Align the matchmarks on the No.2 shaft and main shaft. (b) Torque the bolt. Torque: 35 N-m (360 kgf-cm, 26 ftlbf) uso] 9. — w/ Key Cylinder Lamp: INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY Tighten the screw. 10. w/ Engine Immobiliser System: INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL Tighten the screw. SR-26 asso STEERING — STEERING COLUMN INSTALLATION 1, INSTALL SLIDING YOKE Temporarily install the yoke and tighten the bolt A. 2, INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (a) Torque the ? column assembly set bolts and nuts. Torque: 26 N-m (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft-lbf) NOTICE: While tilting up the steering column, fix the tilt lever to the highest position and tighten the bolt and nut. (b) Connect the connectors, 3. (c) Connect the 2 connectors. 9, INSTALL UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN COVERS (a) Tighten the screw to the upper cover. (b) Tighten the 8 screws to the lower cover. 10. INSTALL LOWER LH INSTRUMENT PANEL INSERT Tighten the 2 bolts. 11. INSTALL LOWER LH INSTRUMENT FINISH PANEL (a) Tighten the 2 bolts. (b) Connect the hood lock control cable. 12, INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE AND COWL SIDE TRIM SR-27 STEERING — STEERING COLUMN 13. w/ Electrically Sensing Type Airbag: CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (a) Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead. (b) Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to tum the cable, ()_ Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 tums to align the marks, HINT The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center 14, INSTALL STEERING WHEEL (a) Align the matchmarks on the stecring wheel and main shaft assembly. (b) Torque the steering wheel set nut Torque: 34 N-m (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft-lbf) (c) Connect the connector. 15. wlo Airbag: INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD Tighten the screw. 16. w/ Mechanical Sensing Type Airbag INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD CAUTION: Never install a pad which has been used in another vehicle. When replacing a pad, always install a new pad. (a) Check that the sensor lock release bolt is loosened so that it tums without resistance. (b) Set the pad in the steering wheel. (c) Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 torx screws. Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.-Ibf) NOTICE: Do not pinch the harness. (4) Gover the torx screw with the bolt cap. (e) Using a torx socket wrench, torque the sensor lock re- lease bolt. Torque: 8.8 N-m (90 kgf-cm, 78 in.-Ibf) (f) _ Install the steering wheel lower No.3 cover. NOTICE: Make sure that the lower cover are properly installed. SR-28 STEERING — STEERING COLUMN 17. wi Electrically Sensing Type Airbag: INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD NOTICE: (a) (d) 18. Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the speci- fied torque. If the wheel pad has been dropped, or if there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connec- tor, replace the wheel pad with a new one. When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wir- ings do not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts. Connect the airbag connector. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumter- ence groove of the torx screws are caught on the screw case. Using a tonx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws. Torque: 8.8 N-m (90 kgf-cm, 78 in.-Ibf) Install the 2 steering wheel lower No.2 covers. DISCONNECT RETURN HOSE Remove the clip and disconnect the hose. NOTICE: Take care not to spill fluid on the drive belt. \ 7) Pressute Feed Tube 2. DISCONNECT PRESSURE FEED TUBE Using SST, disconnect the tube. SST 09631-22020 3. Maximum inside diameter: 28.20 mm (1.1102 in.) Minimum outside diameter: 27.75 mm (1.0925 in.) 3. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE BUSHING AND OIL SEAL (a) Using SST, remove the bushing from the rack housing. NOTICE: Make sure to install the oil seal facing the correct direction. (b) Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it. (c) Expand a new teflon ring with your fingers. NOTICE: Be careful not lo overexpand the ring. (4) Goat the ring with power steering tluta. (e) _ Install the ring to the steering rack and settle it down with your fingers. SR-86 = Screw Extractor STEERING - POWER STEERING GEAR. () Carefully slide the tapered end of SST over the ring until the ring fits to the steering rack. SST 09630-24014 (09631-24031) NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ring. 5. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TEFLON RINGS (a) Using a screwdriver, remove the 4 rings from the control valve assembly. NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the grooves for the ring. (b) Expand 4 new teflon rings with your fingers. NOTICE: Be careful not to overexpand the ring. (c) Goat the rings with power steering fluid. (d) Install the rings to the control valve assembly, and settle them down with your fingers. (e) Carefully slide the tapered end of SST over the rings until the rings fit to the steering rack SST 09631-20081 NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the rings. 6. (b) Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut. (c) Connect the connector. 20. BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM (See page SR-6) 21.
