Child case Study: Baby Boy C

DARCY TOWNLEY

Baby C: The Highlights

C is 17 months old
He has been in daycare full time since he was 3

months old
He lives with his mother and father and is an only
child
His was born at 39 weeks 3 days gestation
C wore a helmet to help shape his head from 5
months to 15 months of age.

Areas of focus
During the interview process I asked his mother what
areas of development she would like me to focus on
during my study. She asked that I focus on:
Social/Emotional Development
Cognitive Development
Language Development

Social/Emotional Development
I had to spend a lot of time observing Cs interactions

with his peers and caregivers to get a grasp of his

social development thus far.
I also spent a lot of time observing Cs reactions to
various situations to ascertain whether or not his
reactions were appropriate for his level of
development.

Language Development
To help increase Cs language skills I spent my time

reading to him, and talking to him A LOT, about

everything.
I chose to read him books with real life images as I
feel they are more relatable.

Cognitive Development
Cognitive development at this stage really speaks to

the childs awareness of his environment, himself,

and peers.
Object permanence is also a big milestone that is
usually achieved around this age.
I played a game with C where I hid a ball under
blocks, and in bags to see if he realized the ball was
still around though he could no longer see it.

Cognitive Development

Cognitive Development
I also provided C with many familiar toys to play

with that resemble everyday objects to see how he

played with them. Did he mimic things he saw his
caregivers do with the phone, baby doll, kitchen
utensils, etc.?

Conclusion
I had a wonderful time completing this project. I

have taken care of C since he joined our center. He

recently moved to a new room . This project helped
me extend my time with him!
I learned more about observation and development
and how to utilize the time I spend at play with the
children I care for.
