HOLY WEEK IN ANTIGUA For lent and Holy Week, our city becomes a “living theater” of Jesus Christ's passion and death. Lent begins on ‘Ash Wednesday. Itis the forty days before Holy Week, wich starts when the first full moon of spring comes. Every Sunday during lent, there is a procession from any of the small villages near Antigua; it parades through all the streets with a wooden Christ on a big wooden float carried by men called “cucuruchos”, who wear purple tunics. After the procession of Jesus Christ. We can always see the procession of Virgin Mary, is carried only by women Every Friday, before the procession leaves the temple, there is a Holy Vigil. Holy Vigils represent scenes from the Bible. They are built by artisans who also make big sawdust and flower carpets. People from the village set on the floor fruits, vegetables, canaries, thanking God for their Jobs, health and food. All the people visit the church from ‘noon until midnigth. And then, in the park outside the church, they drink batido ore at different candies, chciken bread, etc ‘One of the most solemn processions is the one from La Merced. It leaves from the temple on Palm Sunday. On Holy Monday, there is a Holy Vigil in La Merced. On Holy Tuesday, there is one in San Francisco. On Holy Wednesday, There isa children’s procession from La Merced, and at night, there is a Holy Vigil at Escuela de Cristo, (On Maundy Thursday there two processions during the day: one from San Francisco, and the other from San Cristobal, At night, the Holy Sacrament is artisically displayed in all the churches. During this night, the most wonderful and elaboreted carpets are made with flowers or sawdust all the through the city, for the procession that represent Jesus Chris ton his way to the Calvary. It eaves the temple of La Merced ‘on Good Friday, very early in the morning. At three o'clock there is a great ceremony of Christ's Crucifixion inside the temples of Escuela de Cristo and San Felipe. Then, the processions of the Burial of Christ from these two churches leave the temple after the ceremony and the parede all through the city. The “cucuruchos” that carry these processions wear black tunics. On Saturday of Glory. We can only see the procession of Virgin of Loneliness which is carried only by women dressed in black. Sunday of Resurrection, is the last and most important day of Holy Week. On that day there are different ceremonies in all the churches, and We can see the procession of the Resurrection of Christ from the cathedral and San Pedro in all the streets of Antigua. Closing Holy Week with the celebration of Jesus Christ's Victory.
