T asks Ss to brainstorm different types of farms they think exist


in Australia, T writes answers on whiteboard while Ss copy into
their HSIE book. T asks Ss to open up an Atlas and turn to the
page with the map of Australia that shows the different land
uses. T asks Ss to think about why Australia has a diverse
range of Agricultural industries giving prompts on the size of
continent and variety of climates.

Resources and Organisation:

INTRODUCTION
Brainstorm different types of farms in the
local area and within Australia

DEVELOPMENT
T asks Ss to think about what type of farms are located in their

local area. T explains to Ss they are going to jointly research


the features of this farm. T divides Ss into groups and assigns
a different task to each group. The groups are related to these
topics:
Animals and/or plants grown

Location and climate

Products

Machinery

Computer
Task

Cards

Specific jobs on the farms


T gives Ss the task cards, one for each group and tells
students to research their topic on computer or Information
books about farms provided, reminding them to share and take
turns and be respectful to others whilst researching.
T instructs Ss to come together as a group to jointly complete
a retrieval chart, which is based on the topics given. T records
Ss information on the A3 paper which consists of the chart. T
guides Ss through the chart by putting answers under the
appropriate heading.

T discusses with Ss that next session they will do a retrieval


chart on their own. T explains that Ss are to choose a different
type of farm of that studied as a class and complete this chart
based on the farm. T explains to Ss where they may find this
information eg. library, pamphlets, internet, information books.
Ss are then instructed to go and start their research and to do
what they can.
