Mitosis PreLab Questions: Part 1

1. The single cell we developed from went through asexual cell reproduction
called mitosis. It would take at least 47 divisions of the continuously
compounded cells to make an organism with at least 100 trillion cells.
2. Unicellular organisms go through cell division, most commonly binary fission,
to reproduce.
3. The daughter cells must have exact copies or sets of DNA.
4. Genetic information doesnt differ from one cell to another because they were
all derived from the single zygote. The zygote passed on its genetic
information which was passed on to every cell thereafter.
5. If a cell is successful in survival, its genes are suited and can be passed on
asexually to ensure success. Asexual reproduction is best for cells or
organisms well adapted to their environment.
6. If DNA is not replicated, the diploid cells of 46 chromosomes would only have
23 chromosomes. Also, one cell could receive all of the genetic material while
the other cell would die.
7. Chromosomes attach to microtubules functioning as spindle fibers. They then
use motor proteins in the centromeres to move either to the metaphase plate
or to opposite pole in anaphase.
