Introduction
Capacity of Sulphuric Acid plant 98508 TPA of 98.3% strong sulphuric
acid
SAP-I Gas volume of 30550 Nm3/hr & 10.11% SO2
Input to Sulphuric acid plant
SO2 gas from primary SKS furnace
Design Acid Concentration is ~ 98.3%.
Acid Storage tank capacity 5400 MT

Gas Cleaning Plant

Removal of dust,SO3 fumes, mists and fine liquid droplets from gases.
Dust & heat removal by Quenching
Moisture removal by cooling and condensing
Acid mist removal in electro static precipitators.
Impurities being removed: Fluorides, chlorides, & Arsenic .
Weak acid ( < 10 % concentration of sulphuric acid ) generated in gas cleaning
plant is taken to effluent treatment units for neutralization and for removal &
disposal of heavy metal impurities.

Contact gas section


Moisture in GCP outlet gas is totally removed in drying tower (DT).
Dust free and moisture free SO2 gas is being drawn into converter section with
1.2MW SO2 blowers.
Sulphur dioxide to Sulphur trioxide conversion takes place in the 5-bed Catalytic
converter.
SO2 + 1/2 O2 <=> SO3
Vanadium pentoxide catalyst accelerates the rate of conversion of SO2 to SO3
Process employed: Double Contact Double Absorption (DCDA)
Bed Configuration:

Acid Section

The Absorbing Acid System absorbs the sulphur trioxide (SO3) to


produce sulphuric acid. This is done in Inter pass absorption tower & final
pass absorption tower.
The absorption of water into sulphuric acid is an exothermic reaction and
will cause the temperature of the acid to rise. The heat of absorption is
removed through a cooling tower by using plate heat exchangers.
Product acid @ ~98.3% concentration is pumped out from intermediate
absorption tower pump tank after cooling through product cooler PHE &
taken to Mild steel product tank and then transfer to two Acid storage tanks
of capacity 200 MT each, and then form ASD to Acid Storage and dispatch
tank of capacity 5000 MT for storage and later for dispatch through road.
External acid dispatch is done through fully automated one loading station
having four dispatch points which is situated at DSC Zinc Dariba plant.
