1. In problem 3.48, consider the steam pipe to be thick-walled instead of thin walled as in
the original problem. A stainless steel (AIST 304) steam pipe of 0.20m outside diameter
with wall thickness of 20mm is used to transport saturated steam ata pressure of 26.4 bar
in a room for which the air temperature is 30°C and the convection heat transfer
coefficient is 20 Wm’-K. What is the heat loss per unit length from the pipe if it is
insulated with a S0mm-thick layer of insulation (magnesia, 85%)? The insulation surface
has an emissivity of 0.8. Ignore the steam side convection resistance.

2. In problem 4.54, consider the effect of internal heat generation, qdot = 1x10°W/m’, for
the beam of square cross-section (80mm by 80mm) with a boundary condition of 300°C
on three sides and the bottom surface is exposed to convection at 100°C and h =10
W/m’-K. The beam has thermal conductivity of 2W/m-K. With a grid spacing of 40mm
use a finite difference method to find the steady state temperatures T1 and T2.3. Consider the effect of the following modifications to problem 5.100. The plane wall
(k=1.5W/m-K, o= 7.5x10°m’/sec) has thickness of L=50mm and an initial uniform
temperature of 25°C. Suddenly the surface at x=0 is exposed to surface heat flux of
2000W/m* and the surface at x=L is exposed to convection by a fluid for which the
temperature is 50°C and the convective heat transfer coefficient is h=75 W/m?-K: With a
Ax= 50mm and At= 200.0sec, use a finite difference method to find the temperatures TO
and T] after one time step.

4.In problem 14.41, use the implicit finite difference method to estimate the time it takes
for the hydrogen concentration to reach 1.2kmol/m’ at the center of the sheet. The large
sheet of material 40mm thick initially contains dissolved hydrogen in a uniform
concentration of 3.0kmol/m’. Suddenly the surface concentration of hydrogen is reduced
to zero and maintained at that value on both surfaces. Using a Ax= 20mm use the implicit
finite difference method to find the time required to bring the density of dissolved
hydrogen to 1.2kmol/m? at the center of the sheet. The diffusivity of hydrogen in the
material is 9x107m*/sec.
