Ive accomplished a lot during my high school career such as learning to drive, making
new friends, and gaining self confidence. One thing Im the mostproudofisbeinganacademic
mentor. Ihavebeenamentorformyjuniorandsenioryear.Thisprogramhas helpedmegrowas
a leader and also as a student. My director, Richard Sandoval, has done an excellent job of
makingsureeverymentorhasthepropertraining.Healsoensuredeverymentorhadajobtodo.
I didnt sign up to be a mentor to get community service hours, I signeduptogiveback
to the school that has educated me sogreatly.Istriveforexcellenceandhelpingothersstrivefor
their goals. Being in this position is a lot to maintain. I must have a3.0GPAorbetterto stayin
the program. ThiskeepsmeincheckandensuresthatIwillsucceed.IbelieveIhavereachedmy
fullpotentialofbeingaleaderthroughthiswonderfulprogram.
Overall, being an academic mentor has helped me grow as a leader. It has also allowed
me to connect with the students at Merced High that genuinely need help in achieving their
goals. The 120 hours I have put into this school have not only helped the people in need, but it
has helped me majorly. It showed me that I am capable ofchangingsomeoneslifedecisions. It
alsoshowedmethatIcanleadapackofpeopletosuccess.
