Wind Power

History of Wind Power

-In the 1850s farmers started using windmills to pump
water
-Turbines were being built in 1890 in Denmark
-In 1893 the first windmill turbines were being built
-In 1978 companies were allowed to use windmills for
electricity
-In 2007 wind turbines powers 2.5 millions homes in
america

U.S. compared to the world

from wind power, which
is second in the world. The top 5 in the world
are
1. China 66 gigawatts
2. U.S. 60 gigawatts
3. Germany 30 gigawatts
4. Spain
5. India
(Land base and offshore turbine,N.D.)
The U.S. gets 60 gigawatts

How does wind make energy

The windmill will be facing the wind and when the wind hits
it makes the rotor spin on the windmill. When the rotor
moves it gives electricity to the generator. They also call the
windmill a turbine. Wind power is called kinetic. The
materials in windmills are cast iron on the outside.
Kinetic energy is an object producing energy by movement
or motion.

VAWT Savonius
A Vawt Savonius is a VAWT (Vertical axis wind turbine)that
was created in 1922 by Sigurd Johannes Savonius. This
turbine is design to help pump water in farms. The design
is like a S shape because no matter which directions the
wind is going the turbine will pump water

Vawt Darrius
Vawt Darrius is another vertical turbine that is used for
lower winds. It has 3 arms and flat blades attached to the
arm. Its not popular and very expensive

What is a HAWT
A HAWT (Horizontal-axis wind turbine) have the
main rotor and generator on the top of the
turbine. It has to face a specific direction to get
the power to give energy.
