Learner: 5th graders from the Boys & Girls Club at Coleman F. Brown Elementary School.

Purpose: To provide 5th grader with information regarding the risk for head injury when riding a bike (or play certain sports,
such as baseball) without a helmet or not having a proper helmet and promote safety by motivating 5 th graders to
wear a helmet.
Goal: 5th graders will have a basic understanding about the importance of helmet safety and identify what is a properly fitted
and secure helmet.
At the end of the teaching session the learners will:

Introduction/ Self- Introduction and assess learners
Overview
behavior regarding bike riding and helmets.

1. Identify
factors that
increase
risk for
injury and
give stats
on injuries.

Factors: speed, no helmet, improper helmet,

road obstacles, proper clothing.
Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the
emergency department because of bike
injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries
that require a few days in the hospital. Some
of these injuries are so serious that children
die, usually from head injuries.

Understand
the anatomy
of the brain
and its
function

Inside our skull is the brain. Our brain is the

boss of your body. It runs the show and
controls just about everything you do, even
when you're asleep
The biggest part of the brain is the cerebrum.
The cerebrum makes up 85% of the brain's
weight. It is made of four lobes.
Frontal lobe: controls your thoughts, behavior,
planning, and creativity.
Parietal lobe: sensory information, such as

their bikes (or those who
play baseball, ride a
skateboard).
-Ask them if they wear a

their bike.
