20200 prampet MUSIC AT THE COURT OF KROMERIZ Al J.H. SCHMELZER SONATA a 3 for Trumpet (Clarino), Violin, Trombone & Basso Continuo MUSICA RARA LONDON W.1 NUXPNISE /\ Ser Honan THE VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF THE ARTS 20200 ‘The ‘Sonata 4 3° for trumpet, violin, trombone and continuo published here for the first time has unfortunately come down to us without its composer's name. It is generally considered today that this exceptional piece of music was in all probability written by Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, the presumed teacher of Biber Certain similarities in style can be found between it and other works known to be by him (e.g, ‘Sonata la Carolietta’; sonata for violin, bassoon and continuo; sonata for violin, trombone, bassoon and continuo). The present work is in one movement of two sections, the first being a slow introduction followed by a chaconne and variations. The chaconne has been written over an ostinato bass of four bars repeated 24 times and the variations become progressively more brilliant, each player being given an opportunity to show his skill. The most difficult music is found in the trombone part which, in the manuscript, changes clef six times using no fewer than four different clefs in the process!(soprano, alto, tenor and bass ). The clefs in this edition have been reduced to alto throughout with the exception of bars 25-27 where the bass clef is necessary. The manuscript has been very carelessly copied, especially the trombone part which contains two very serious errors (six bars rest instead of seven between bars 64 and 72; change of clef not shown in bar 108) and one wonders if the music was ever performed from these parts. The only surviving bass part is marked ‘Violone’ and has been figured although no indication concerning the other continuo instruments can be found. A harpsichord has been suggested in this edition; there is no reason why an organ or lute cannot be successfully used instead, although doubling the bass with a bassoon or cello would be undesirable. A short unrelated fragment of music in two staves with tablature can also be found on the title page and was probably a sketch for some other composition; there is an inscription in Czech underneath it. 2 Trumpet SONATA 4 3 in C MAJOR ‘for Trumpet, Violin, Trombone and Continuo JH.
