Title of Unit: Probability

Title of Lesson: Probability vocab
Grade Level: 6th
Goal: Students will understand what probability is and the vocab to go along with it.
They will also know how to apply that knowledge to solve problems.

Objectives:

Students will:

1. Learn what probability is.

2. Learn different ways to express probability numerically: as a ratio, a decimal,
and a percentage.
3. Learn how to solve problems based on probability.

Standards/Assessment Anchors:

CC.2.4.7.B.3: Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate

probability models.
NCTM standard D1: Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and
collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.

Formative Assessment:
1. Worksheet
2. Note cards
3. Homework

Rational: Probability is a major part in math and everyday life.

Content Knowledge: Probability
Procedure:
Lesson Beginning:

1. Motivation: Who here likes to play Board games? Anyone have any
favorites ask specific people.
2. List them on the board.
3. Does anybody know what probability is?
4. What if I told you that knowing probability could make you have an
advantage?
5. At the end of this lesson we will be playing one of these games.
6. But first we have to learn more about probability.
Lesson development:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Begin the lesson by asking students to define probability?

Pick a student to give an example.
Hand out note cards with the vocab words on them already
We will make definitions as a class with hints from the teacher to get
on the right track.
5. Pass out dice, cards, and coins to each group with the what are my
chances worksheet
6. Work on work sheet
Lesson Ending:
1. Pass out Homework
2. Next class we will use what we learned and apply it to Settlers of
Catan a really fun board game.

Materials: 13 note cards, Smart board, 2 dice, deck of cards, coin, What are my
chance worksheet per person

Mode: The class will consist 4 groups of about 5 students in each group.
Special Adaptations: This lesson can be adapted for students with special needs.
Any student that is hard of hearing or seeing should sit toward the front of the room
at the beginning of the lesson. Students that have learning disabilities may need
extra attention when working in the groups.
Anticipated Difficulties:

Might go over time.

The students might need more help then anticipated to get to the definitions.
