The authors dig deeper than just the looks and sounds of punk culture. Details are provided on
exactly what punks were all about. Their meaning and motives are revealed through an explanation
of their actions in politics and society. The article goes through the history of punk culture
starting in both London and throughout America. Punk groups that made large movements in society
like Riot Grrrl, a feminist movement group, are mentioned as huge foundations of punk culture.
The article also goes in to detail about the extreme rebellious attitudes punks held that society
constantly point out. There is a reason for every action of the punks and the authors address them
all. This is important for the research paper because it outlines an important part of the thesis, their
meaning and motives. This article provided every aspect of their meaning and motives needed to

Carrillo-Vincent, Matthew. Wallflower Masculinities And The Peripheral Politics

Of Emo. Social Text 31.3_116 (2013): 35. Advanced Placement Source.
Web. 17 Feb. 2015.
Carrillo explains how this emo scene that has spread over the years is just another form of punk culture
in society today. The article goes on comparing punk and emo. Punk has a particular way of generating a call for
response and so does emo. The author points all the similarities out to prove punk is alive today in all kinds of
forms like emo. Carrillo gives some lyrics from a Wonder Years song to show the similar feelings created by the
emo scene. He goes on to explain that not one artist like the Wonder Years has defined themselves as an emo band
therefore leaving only the title of punk. This article is important to the research paper because it proves the life of
punk coming in new, but similar forms. The sound has evolved, but emos, like the punks, still have similar motives
and feelings. This knowledge can give a better explanation of todays punks sound and motives in the research
paper.

Clark, Dylan. 2003. The Death and Life of Punk, The Last Subculture, pp. 223-36,
In David Muggleton and Rupert Weinzierl (eds.), The Post-Subcultures Reader.
Oxford: Berg.
Clark explains how the classic punk from 70s and 80s has died, but new punk continues to rise in different
forms. He includes some history of the early punk culture while comparing it to what has become of punk today.
Clark tells of the importance of punk culture to the youth and society as important movements have been made
through this culture. Issues are constantly being addressed by punks to make a difference and you can see this in
the past and today. The author wanted to make it clear that punk is still alive but the classic is dead. In conclusion

this article makes it clear the classic needed to die so the culture could live because the world is constantly
changing with different problems occurring. This article is important for the research paper because it addresses
my research question directly giving important proof of existence and change.
