Lesson Plan Title: Neighborhoods

families, classmates, neighbors and neighborhoods, and ethnic
and cultural groups.*
Lesson Plan Objectives:
Show that all things are different by introducing different types of
neighborhoods by reading a story and constructing a
neighborhood/community out of blocks.

Book: On the Town: A Community Adventure by Judith Caseley

Building Blocks
Pictures of buildings and communities
Preparation Time: 60 minutes

Motivator:
Show the pictures of the different buildings and communities and
ask the students what is different in the pictures from our
town/community.
Introduction:

Read the story.

Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Show the pictures and discuss the differences between the
pictures and our community. *
2. Introduce the book and ask for ideas of what it may be
about.*
3. Read the story.
4. Discuss the book and answer any questions.*
Ex. What businesses did you see?
Was it a large neighborhood or small?
What kind of people did you see?
5. Divide students into groups and send the groups to prepared
block centers.*
6. Have students construct their own neighborhoods and
towns.*
7. After building, the students will share their creations and tell
what businesses (if any) they included and why.*
