Lesson: Equivalent Fractions

Grade: 3rd
Date: October 5, 2014
Objective: Learn how to tell that fractions can be equal to each other. Such as 1/2 = 3/6
Common Core Standard: CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their
size.
Time: 30 min
Materials:
Flash cards with different fractions on them.
Power point
Instruction: We have worked with fractions and now we are going to tell how they can be
equivalent. We will go over how fractions can be equivalent by using an example of a candy bar.
Then we will use multiplication to figure out how to do this mathematically. This can also be
done with division. A pie chart can help us decide how many parts of the fraction are needed in
order to be the same as another fraction. After working on a few problems together we will play
a game where we have to line up from least to greatest according to our fractions.
Homework: Practice finding equivalent fractions on practice worksheet. Quiz the following
class period.
