Mary Poppins (1964)

Film review
Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies. It is a musical fantasy film from
1964, directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney. The film is a
combination of colour, music and dance with Julie Andrews in the titular role of the
nanny who comes to help a family in London.
The film is inspired from the first book in the Mary Poppins series by P.L.Travers.
The idea to make a film after this book came from Disney, after his daughter fell in love
with the book. He had a hard time purchasing the film rights to Mary Poppins from
P.L.Travers because she didnt believe that a film version of the book would be at the
level of her writing. After 20 years of unsuccessful attempts Disney managed to convince
her to allow him to make a Mary Poppins film. She got script approval rights and
disagreed with many things that, in the end, made it in the movie. The book storyline was
changed in many places and was transformed in a cheerful Disney-like movie.
Mary Poppins is a film that I would watch over and over again. It presents a
magical story of the nanny who comes from the sky in response to Mr. Banks
advertisement. She is a loving woman, firm in her position of authority but also kind and
gentle. She manages to help the family solve their problems and brings positive changes
in their lives.
The songs in the movie are beautiful and so is the dancing. Mary Poppins
received many awards and nominations and remains until this day a beautiful creation of
Walt Disney.
