1.

Inventory: Knowing your students and what they like to read. Using inventory it allows
the teacher to understand her students as individuals and catering to their needs as students.

2. Activities: How will students use the knowledge they gain from the unit? Activities such as
games, group work, etc. will help students understand the meaning and purpose of the
overall unit.
3. Discussion: Implementing discussions into units allow students to express their own
individual ideas about the texts they are reading. Students are interpreting and analyzing
texts and building on each others ideas through the different types of discussions that are
offered in a classroom.
4. Selecting MaterialsLiterary value: Deciding on the type of texts that will be used in a unit
is crucial to the teacher and the students. As teachers we want to choose novels that will get
the message of the unit across to our students and as students they want to read something
that will capture their attention and keep them reading.
5. Cultural Significance: The texts we choose as teachers for our units should at times relate to
culture whether it be at a national, local, or distant level. This allows the student to engage
with the text as they learn about other culture than their own or they even get to witness their
own culture placed into a novel which could allow for a strong engagement.

6. Relevance: When choosing texts for a unit it is important to keep in mind our students and
finding novels that they would enjoy reading. This can be done by choosing texts where
students can relate to the characters and even the entire culture of the book.
7. Writing a Rationale: Writing a rationale helps keep a teacher in check as to why she has
decided to design her current unit and what the underlying purpose of the unit is. It is a way
for her to understand her goals of the unit and what will be accomplished by the teacher and
her students.
8. Preparation for Future Needs: When designing a unit it is important to make sure what
students are learning has a purpose and can be used in the future. This can include teaching
tools that students will use in college that way they will be familiar with these concepts.
