Solved BHSEC 2014 - Unit II: Current Electricity

1. The best instrument for the accurate measurement of emf of a cell is

A. an ammeter.
B. a voltmeter.
C. a potentiometer.
D. a wheat stone bridge.
Ans.: a potentiometer
2. A bridge arrangement of resistances by which the of a given conductor can be

determined is known as . (resistance, potential, Wheatstones bridge, potentiometer)

Ans.: resistance, Wheatstones bridge
3. The resistance of a wire changes when wire is bent at one or more points. True or False?
Ans.: False
ml
Reason : R= 2
ne a
R depends on relaxation time and number of free electrons. Even when the wire is bent,
neither the number of free electrons nor the relaxation time changes.
4. Derive an equation for internal resistance (r) of a cell.
Ans.: We know that
V = E ir ------ (i)
Since
E
---------(ii)
i=
R+r
Substituting equation (ii) into (i)
E
V=E-(
)r
R+r
r
V= E (1 )
R+r
R+r-r
V=E(
)
R+r
R
V=E(
)
R+r
V(R+r) = ER
VR + Vr = ER
Vr = ER VR
Vr = R(E-V)
E-V
r = R(
)
V
5. Define electric power. Give its SI unit.
Ans.: The rate at which electric energy is transferred into other forms of energy is called
electric power. SI unit is watt.

6. Draw a graph to show the variation of thermo e.m.f with temperature of hot junction. Give the
relation between temperature of inversion (Ti) and neutral temperature (Tn).
Ans.:
Graph
Relation between Ti (Temperature of inversion) and Tn
(Neutral temperature) is Ti = 2Tn

7. Calculate the equivalent resistance in the given circuit.

Solution
In the figure
R7 , R8 and R9 are in series. So
Rx = R7 + R8 + R9
Rx=2 + 2 + 2 = 6
Now Rx and R6 are in parallel. So
1

+
6

1 1
= + = 2
6 3
Now Ry , R4 and R5 are in series. So
Rz = Ry + R4 + R5
Rz = 6
Now Rz and R3 are in parallel, so
1

1 1
=

+ = 2
3 6 3
Now Rf is in series with R1 and R2, so the effective resistance RE is
RE = Rf + R1+ R2
RE = 2 + 2+ 2
RE = 6
