eg. Guided reading as a strategy

Before Reading:
Getting Knowledge Ready
Before we read today we need to get our knowledge ready so we are able to make sense of what we read.
When you tell me what this book is about so far you need to include important information - What should you
tell me? (characters, setting, general plot, initiating events, actions, predictions of what might happen next)
In as much detail as possible what can you tell me about the Magic Finger so far?
When we have finished reading I am going to ask you to retell what has happened in this chapter in as much
detail as possible.
Visualising
Lets look at the picture on page 33. Who can give me a sentence about what they can see. Think about how
the sentence might appear in the text. How might the characters be feeling?

While reading
Visualising
Read page 33 did our sentences fit with what the text said?

Read page 34 and 35. Are there any words you are not sure of? What image did you make in your mind of
Philip on the phone?

Read page 36 & 37. What image did you imagine in your mind about the night in the nest? Encourage students
to think about the descriptive language they read, have students use actions to describe what they visualised.
Read any other pages in the chapter to yourself making visual images in your mind as you read.

After Reading
Retell
Think about the things we brainstormed at the start of the session that are important when retelling what is
happening in a story.

Can you retell this chapter with as much detail as possible - observe for inferential understanding as well as
literal.
