Subject: Geography
Lesson Overview: This is an Indigenous based lesson where students will explore the map of Australia in both English &
Indigenous terms. Students will work individually to locate the different states and label the map. Students will use ICT to
explore major geographical features of each state and territory by summarising and writing a small paragraph within that state.
Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will have an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to identify the
different states, territories and cities in Australia. Students will explore the indigenous terms used for these locations based from
an Indigenous map of Australia. Students will write a concise small paragraph of the major geographical features of each
state/territory.
Lesson Intentions: To explore the different states/territories/geographical features within Australia using Indigenous and
English terms.
Background Knowledge: Prior to starting this activity, the teacher will have a whole class discussion with students about what
was learnt last lesson when students explored how Indigenous communities are connected to certain places. Students have a
general understanding that Indigenous communities have a different language which is still used today. This activity would be
implemented in a second or third lesson.
Literacy Demands: Comprehending texts through listening, reading and viewing, composing texts through speaking, writing
and creating, text, grammar, visual and word knowledge.
Numeracy Demands: Spatial reasoning
ICT: Investigating with ICT, Managing and operating, applying social and ethical protocols and practices when using ICT.
General Capabilities: Critical and creative thinking, Intercultural Understanding
Cross Curriculum: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Histories and Cultures is the key cross curriculum priority for this
lesson as students will investigate Indigenous terms.
Resources: Geography Books, 1 x iPad per student, Interactive whiteboard to show students maps needed, 1 map of Australia
per student, Pencil case, Ruler
Adjustments/Differentiation: This lesson has been created to support diverse learners through incorporating ICT, whole group
and small group discussions. Students who require additional scaffolding with this task will be supported by the teachers aide
and teacher. Additionally, students who have a strong understanding will have been placed in groups with peers who require
assistance.

For: Participation in whole class discussion
As: Students can assess their own learning via participating in class discussion and individual activities
Student Orientated Instructions:
1. Remove all items off your desk except your pencil case
2. Get one person from each desk group to collect one iPad for each student and one map of Australia template

3. Open your iPad to a new internet tab and type in the website on the board to access the interactive map
4. Open a new tab and type in Google Maps
5. On your Australia Map you need to;
a. Label each state
b. Label each main city in that state using the English and Indigenous term
c. Research the main places in each state that attract tourists
d. Locate where they are on your map and label in English terms
