Pour 100mL of

coffee into the

same separation
funnel.

Pour 20mL of
dichloromethane
into a 250mL
separation
funnel.

For coffee and

teas, boil water
on hot plate and
steep leaves or
grounds.

To remove any
remaining water,
add anhydrous
sodium sulfate to
the collected
dichloromethane
and let it sit for
approx. 10 min.
before draining
the
dichloromethane.

Let the solutions

settle and
separate for
approximately a
minute before
draining the
bottom
dichloromethane
layer from the
funnel.

Invert and
shake the funnel
several times
carefully to
prevent
emulsions for
approximately 1
min.

Add the caffeine

and
dichloromethane
solution into a
round bottom flask
for the RotoVap.

After solvent is
removed from
caffeine using
the RotoVap,
dilute the
remaining
powder with
methanol.

Add into a GC
vial for analysis.
Repeat for
remaining four
drinks.
