Persepolis

Persepolis is a film
written and directed by
Vincent Paronnaud and
Marjane Satrapi.
Paronnauds previous
work includes, Chicken
with plums and Raging
Blues. Satrapi also
worked on Chicken with
plums and directed 2014
film The Voices starting
Ryan Reynolds. Both
directors dont have a particular style in their films. Persepolis is a black and
white animation with a very simple style. Voice stars in this animation include
Chiara Mastroianni (Marjane) and Danielle Darrieux (Marjanes grandma).

The film is about a young Iranian girl, who is growing up during the Islamic
revelation. Marji is a young girl full of questions about the shahs and why her
uncle is in prison. As she grows and witnesses her country being ruled by the
Islamic fundamentalist she begins to speak her mind. Her parents become
worried and therefore send her study in France. Growing into a young woman in
a foreign country Margi finds it difficult to adjust. She moves several times and
doesnt feel as though she belongs somewhere until she falls in love, only to have
her heart broken. We see the film from Marjis perspective and witness the
troubles she faces along the way.

The film is telling a story of a young girl who is up growing up during a
revolution. Being a female she wasnt able to voice her opinion, as it would affect
her and her family. Even being away from the war she faced cultural difficulties
and found it hard to adjust. This film allows the audience see the struggles
families had during this time. I would recommend this film, as it has a great
story and the simple animation style has a great charm.
