2007 International Bamboo Building Design Competition

Visionary Designs for Ecological Living

The first International Bamboo Building Design

Competition was created in 2006 to develop new
award winnin g design s for bamboo buildings ,
raise awareness of the use of certified structural
bamboo for building code approved structures,
and introduce architects, designers and builders
to bamboo as a structural material.
Contestant s registere d from 64 countrie s and
submitted 250 designs in 12 building categories
such as famil y housing , urban buildings ,
emergenc y shelters , commercia l and public
buildings and even treehouses. An international
panel of 16 jurors selected the top 50 finalists. In
the final round, the jury chose the overall 1st,
2nd and 3rd prizes. Criteria for judging were
Utili ty (functionali ty), Strengt h (structu ral
integrity), Beauty (aesthetic appeal), Concept and
Design Development, Graphic Layout and Use and
Expression of Bamboo.
Sponsor s were Bambo o Technologie s and
Internationa l Networ k of Bamboo and Rattan
(INBAR). Winning designs may be selected to be
commerciall y built, with royalties paid to the
designer. Other awards are inclusion in a book on
bamboo buildings, international media articles,
gallery exhibitions, and free stay in a bamboo
house on Maui.

50 Finalist s came from these 25 countries :

Denmark , Ecuado r, France, Germany, India,
Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands,
Peru, Portugal , Slovakia, South Korea, Spain,
Thailand , Trinida d & Tobago, United Kingdom ,
United States, Vietnam.
The results of the competition in this catalog are
truly exciting and innovative, providing a fresh
outlook for the possibilities that bamboo can play
in a new green world.
On July 29, 2007 an installation of entries by the
50 finalists opened at an exhibition concurrent
with Document a in Kassel, Germany at the
KunstHochSchule Design University. Four videos
projected on two walls and two monitors showed
3d models and construction of these designs in
far off corners of the world. Eike Roswag, first
place winner, brought a sample beam from his
Bangladesh project. (see photo below).
This exciting show moves to Guangzhou, China on
September 22 and to Beijing in November at the
Great Hall of the People. It is our hope this show
will travel to museums and galleries around the
world. Please email us if you are interested in
seeing this show in your city or more information
about a project. A full size book featuring more
projects and details will be published in 2008.

Bamboo Living Style.

Graceful bamboo
homes are works of art, like a piece of fine
furniture, and have a handcrafted quality look
and feel.

Three good reasons for choosing bamboo homes

1. Environmental. It takes an acre of trees to build a typical home, but because bamboo
grows so fast and dense, the bamboo for a home grows in an area the size of the home itself.
Use bamboo and save a forest.
2. Structural. Bamboo exceeds strength of construction wood by several times. It is durable,
resilient and long-lasting.
3. Aesthetic. Bamboo has a tradition dating back thousands of years because it is considered
a beautiful material with such a luxurious ambiance.
