Math

In order to teach math means having deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Now
with the Common Core Standards, teaching math has become more challenging. The CCSS
requires that students understand mathematics in a new way, of not just knowing the basics.
Students need to think critically and, learn new skills and knowledge necessary to participate in
the global economy of the twenty first century. This knowledge will help the students
understand the importance of learning mathematical content in the context of real-world
situations. This means helping students learn more than the basics, the standards for high
mathematics. This will help them be prepared for collage, careers, and civic life. These standards
focus on three major principles: focus, coherence, and mathematics to solve problems. I would
teach my students to develop critical thinking while doing a math problem, such as to think
outside the box. Be more of a critical thinker and apply it to the real world.
My math classes have taught me to be able to use knowledge and experience when
encountering new and unexpected situations. Develop higher level of thinking skills, learn to
formulate, analyze, and model problems. My Math 131, Math143, and Math 153 classes also
helped me to understand how to teach math to my future students in the way that my professors
will always model how math works and how it could be related to the outside world with
different strategies as well as a lot of thinking and reasoning.
My artifact, a chapter summary, is from my Math 143: Problem Solving in Mathematics. In this
chapter summary we learned to read and understand the different ways to look at a problem and
learn the different ways to work the problem. This chapter shows us how two fundamental

mathematical processes like how to specialize and generalize a problem. Math could be very
hard subject but with a really good understanding of how everything you learn could be relate to
the everyday life. This summary demonstrates my understanding of specialize and generalize a
problem, which connects to all the grades in the standards. It also demonstrates my ability to
understand math deeply and use it effectively. The summary also helped with my ability to write
a good summary. Mathematics impacts everyday life, future careers, and good citizenship. Im
looking forward in teaching my future math class and helping my students be more engaged in
math that will help them see math as the key that will open the doors to the world of
opportunities.
