Objective:
Students will be able to recognize printmaking artist, explain the process of printmaking, and
practice printmaking. The students will create an edition of prints develop printmaking skills.

Teaching The Lesson:

Introduction (15 Minutes):
The introduction will begin by interesting the students in a PowerPoint that will contain
information regarding media, line, and the printmaking process as well as images.
The PowerPoint http://www.slideshare.net/KatieP13/printmaking-history-and-types
The images will be used to discuss:
Do you think that some of these images make a greater impact as a print compared to any
other media to the viewer?
Do you think that the type of media can affect what you, as an artist, are trying to get
across?
How does using line in the image impact the image? How can an artist create space with
the use of line?
Use of Resources:
The PowerPoint will be used to introduce the students to line and printmaking terms as
well as the process.
The PowerPoint will be used to reinforce the students prior knowledge regarding line
and introduce them to the printmaking process.
Students will be responsible for passing out materials in a timely manner and cleaning up.
I will have each table be a station and at the table I will place two different colored inks
and two rollers.

Demonstration (15 Minutes):

I will be doing a quick demonstration and have materials prepared in different stages of the
process so the class can see me physically doing it. I will give them about 30 minutes to work
on drawing their image before I continue with my demonstration.
Once the 30 minutes are over I will continue with the demonstration. I will then take my
completed image on the Styrofoam (that I have prepared in advanced) and demonstrate how
to engrave the image on the Styrofoam with the candle and wire. Then I will roll paint on it
with the spray can and continue with directions on how to print the image on my paper.
Must emphasize the following about the process Do not get hands dirty to avoid their work
from getting dirty. Also, specify how to hold the wire to avoid accidents.

Student Activity (45 Minutes)

The Assignment:
o The students will create the same image that they are using for their Nazca Line
project on Styrofoam plates to learn about another process and reflect on how the
choice of media affects the presentation of the image as well as using different
types of lines to create their images. The student must do at least one edition of
four prints.

Clean up (10-15 minutes): Students will be responsible for cleaning up their materials in
a timely manner such as placing their papers on the drying rack, the rollers, the ink, etc.

Discussion: As a class we will discuss the process and their thoughts about their prints.
Review the technical terms used in printmaking as well their difficulties with their
process.
