Character Analysis

Othello This is the first notable scene in which Iago teases Othello with the
idea of cuckoldry. Through passive-aggressive gestures and implications,
Iago introduces the possibility of Desdemona having an affair with Cassio.
This scene sets the pace for the rest of the story, as Othello begins to trust
Iago over everyone else. His trust in Iago allows for further manipulation and
his ultimate downfall. Throughout the passage, Iago plays on Othellos
jealousy and ego no man wants to be cuckolded. Because Othello is newlywed, Iago is immediately able to ruin his trust in Desdemona. This scene
marks the beginning of Othellos transformation from a proud, prominent
man in Venetian society to a jealous, frenzied killer.

Iago In this scene we begin to see Iagos evil plan take shape. Prior to the
events depicted with our acting, Desdemona nags at Othello nonstop on
Cassios behalf. This greatly irritates Othello (who is already beginning to
doubt Desdemonas innocence), and Iago preys on this irritation.
Shakespeare uses dramatic irony as a strong literary device to emphasize
Iagos evil intentions, as Othello often praises Iago for his honesty. Iago
doesnt really develop in this scene, but his actions cause Othello to degrade
into the animalistic character we see at the end.
