Please describe the concept of value what are we talking about? And what are three ways to
create value in a composition? And discuss the translations.
Value the term used to measure lightness and darkness. Shading is one way of using value in a
composition. Shading in a drawing is the imitation of shadow or low light. Artist would usually
add shading in relation to where the sun is facing. Adding shading in the precise and accurate
areas is an example of value pattern. Value pattern is the arrangement of value in a composition
and the amount of variation in light and dark, independent to the colors used. Cross hatching is
another technique of using a series of lines to build value and even give the illusion of form. In
the sitting boy is an example of using cross hatching to evoke form and create value emphasis in
a composition. Value emphasis is the contrast between light and dark to create a focal point in a
composition. For instance, in the drawing of the sitting boy, the contrast of value around the boy
makes it the focal point of the whole composition.
