Other than for the purposes mentioned in the article such as number concepts and

to expand their vocabulary I think teaching children the calendar is a waste of time
before they are developmentally old enough to learn it. No matter how much you
drill information into a 3 or 4 year olds head, it wont stick. In fact, if it is done
inappropriately enough, teaching the calendar could have adverse effects, possibly
even causing a child to dread learning any of the useful concepts that can be gained
from the calendar.
I think it is best instead to use calendar vocabulary in normal language; yesterday
we went to the park, today we are at school, tomorrow we have an appointment
or you go to grandpas house on Friday, today is Wednesday, you still have 2 days
until Friday. Other than using calendar concepts in a natural way such as this, I
think it is better to leave calendar discussion out of the classroom, there are so
many fun and developmentally appropriate ways to teach number concepts and to
expand a childs vocabulary.
