Lesson: Introduction to Google Chromebooks and Google Earth
Standards: CSS: Social Studies 2.1. Geographic tools such as maps and globes represent places. CSS: Social Studies 2.1.e. Students can create simple maps showing both human and natural features. Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to technological means of creating maps and looking at the Earth (and its human and man-made landforms). Goal for Leaners: It is my goal that all students will gain a cursory knowledge of Google Chromebooks (and Google Drive, Google Earth and its apps). I also hope that students will be able to examine maps on Google Earth (zooming in and out to gain a different perspective of natural and man-made landforms). Learning Principles: I believe that students learn best through experiential learning; therefore I want to give each student an adequate amount of time to explore the Google Chromebooks before going into Google Earth. Learning Objective: Students will be able to sign on to their Google accounts on Google Chromebooks. Students will be able to explore the Chromebooks and set their preferences. Students will be able to use Google Earth to explore landforms. Setting: This lesson will take place in our classroom (room 107). The first part of the lesson, a whole group introduction to the Google Chromebooks, will occur on the carpet at the front of the room. The second part, during which groups of 6 students at a time will explore the Chromebooks, will take place at the large table at the back of the room. Materials: Google Chromebooks Promethean Board Activity Procedure: 1. Prepare notecards for students with their usernames and passwords
2. Walk through Chromebook sign on with whole group and
changing of preferences 3. Demonstrate Google Earth 4. Randomly call groups of 6 students at a time to work at the back table center with the Chromebooks a. Help groups sign on to their own accounts and change preferences b. Let students explore Google Earth Differentiation: D and L, like the other students, will have as much extra attention as necessary since I will be working with a small group each time. Assessment: I will be taking informal notes and assessing how the students are doing while signing on to the Google accounts. Extensions: Students who finish early can continue to explore the Chromebooks and the applications available to them.
