API RP 2A Joint Design

Allowable stress: Fyc = min (yield, 0.8xTensile strength)

(72 ksi)

- for Fy < 500 Mpa

High restraint joints suffer from: Large Strain Concn. And cracking / lamellar tearing
Min Capacity : Actual loads or 50% section capacity (buckling / tensile based on
yield capacity)
Weld capacity shall not be less than the lesser of:
a) Strength of branch (based on yield) or

b) Strength of chord based on 4.3 1a / 1b

Joint classification - K, X , Y, T
Braces within +/- 15 deg shall be considered within the common brace plane
The joint can be a mixture between the above 3 types
K Axial load in the braces shall balance within 10% of the loads in the other
braces in the same plane on the same side
Y (or T) axial load in the brace acts as beam shear on chord
X the load in the brace is transferred through the chord to the opposite side
Manipulation of load is not permitted to force the joint classification in to a
particular type
