Reflection of the Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia

In the state of Georgia, there is a Code of Ethics for Educators that sets the stage and the
boundaries as to what an Educator is and what role they play in being effective leaders in the school
system and the classrooms. When reflecting on the document, 505-6-.01, it was obvious that the
definition that was given as an "educator", did not umbrella the vast majority of teachers, instructors,
professors and current administrators in my sector of education in the community technical colleges.
The insert directly states:
(c)Educator is a teacher, school or school system administrator, or other
education personnel who holds a certificate issued by the Georgia Professional
Standards Commission and persons who have applied for but have not yet
received a certificate. For the purposes of the Code of Ethics for Educators,
educator also refers to paraprofessionals, aides, and substitute teachers ("The
code of," 2014).
As an educator on the technical side it seems we are not governed under the same code of ethics and
it shows within the policies that each school writes and sets for the faculty and staff.
The code of ethics for Georgia further indicates the definition for what a student is and that
illustrates the student as a person in the school system from the grade levels of pre- kindergarten to
the grade level of 12 or those persons in the age bracket of 3 to 17 but not to exceed 18 years. For the
Technical College System of Georgia, the student population varies with age and categories. We have
an access of students ranging from 16 to a peak of 70 in some cases. This does not mean that are not
a student based on the code of ethics presented in Georgia, it purely means that situations and
altitudes of higher education or extended education have leeway's of articulating what works for
adult learners versus those students who have not matriculated to that level.
