CE 15: A Proposal for Experiment on Conservation of Linear and/or Angular

Momentum in Fluid Mechanics
I.

Objectives
Demonstrate the concept of conservation of momentum in fluid
mechanics by this experiment

Appreciate the relationship between experimental results and

theoretical analysis on the application of momentum
principles in fluid mechanics
Gather an informative data where in results and conclusions
may originate from

II.

Materials
Hydraulic Bench
Hydraulic Flow Demonstrator

III.

Procedure
Prepare the hydraulic bench and hydraulic Flow Demonstrator
apparatus in the laboratory
Start the pump and set the desired flow of water
Raise the gate in the upper end of the channel to a height less
than that of the water behind it and make sure that the height
of the water is greater than the height of the gap or opening
of the gate
Raise the height of the gate in the lower end of the channel
Record the height of the gates, height of water just after the
upper gate and just before the lower gate
Repeat the procedure by adjusting the flow rate and the
height of the gates

IV.

Data and Results

We gather data of gate opening height, flow of liter per time,
height of the water on parts of the channel and flow rate
By these gathered data, we may derive the theoretical data of
depth, the velocity and experimental heights
We may rely on the following equations in this experiment:
Q = bV1h1 = bV2h2
(0.5)gbh12 (0.5)gbh22 = Q(V2-V1)
Momentum = V12h/2g + h12/2
Momentum1 = Momentum2
