ASSIGNMENT 1
Answer All Questions
1. A vessel contains 85 liter of water at 10C and atmospheric pressure. If it is heated to
70C, calculate the percentage change in its volume. What weight of water must be
removed to maintain the volume at the original value?
2. In Figure Q2, oil of viscosity fills the gap of thickness Y. Calculate the torque T
required to rotate the truncated cone at constant speed . Neglect fluid stress exerted on
the circular bottom.

3. Very small pressure differences PA-PB can be measured accurately by the two-fluid
differential manometer in Figure Q3. Density 2 is only slightly larger than that of the
upper fluid 1. Derive a expression for the proportionality between h and PA-PB if the
reservoirs are very large.

4. This Utah-shaped plate is submerged in oil (s= 0.82) and lies in a vertical plane (Figure
Q4). Find the magnitude and location of the hydrostatic force acting one side of the plate.

5. A small metal pan of length 100cm, width 20cm and depth 4cm is floating in water.
When a uniform vertical load of 1.5N/m is applied as shown in Figure Q5, the pan
assumes the given configuration. Find the weight of the pan and the magnitude of the
righting moment developed by the change in the position of the line of action of the
buoyant force.
