CREW wants IG investigation into RFS levels

5/22/14 1:08 PM EDT

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington wants the EPA inspector general to
investigate whether the Carlyle Group and Delta Airlines "improperly influenced" EPA's
proposed 2014 Renewable Fuel Standard mandates. Both the airline and the private equity group
bought refineries near Philadelphia in 2012.
In a letter, the watchdog group cited a Reuters
that Pennsylvania lawmakers Robert Brady
and Patrick Meehan lobbied the administration, including Vice President Joe Biden and White
House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, on the RFS. The White House told the wire service it
listens to all sides and weighs the arguments critically.
"Our concern is that special interests with both a financial stake in the mandated renewable fuel
levels and powerful political connections improperly influenced the process, resulting in
proposed standards that would reverse the EP A's prior policy of increasing the required amount
of renewable fuels,'' the group
to EPA IG Arthur Elkins.
CREW said it does not have a position on the specific RFS levels.
