Independent Novel Study

Flush by Carl Hiaasan

Students will now take a novel to read at home as a week-long assignment. At the end of
each week, there will be a comprehension quiz for the chapters read, as well as a grade
given for the guiding questions assigned. The students understand the level and quality of
work that is expected, therefore the work is to be done independently (no parental
involvement) in order to assess the academic progress of the student. This assignment will
be used to guide instruction on targeted skills in the classroom. Students are responsible
for keeping their Novel Journal and novel in their book bags, since a class discussion on the
novel can happen at any time. Should their journal or novel not be in class for the
discussion, they will receive a 0% for participation. All work will be due on the Friday of that
week, no late work will be accepted. I will give the new assignment the Friday prior, giving
any students a chance to start on their assignments early. Any novels that are lost will have
to be replaced by the student, so please take care of the book that has been assigned to
you.
Thank you, Ms. Santana
