1. 1. Watch the Population Reference Bureaus Highlights of the 2014 World

Population Data Sheet and identify the major trends and statistics discussed
in the video.
a. Women are having fewer children (4.7 per woman in 1970, 2.5 today)
b. World population is rising, almost all of this growth will be from less
developed countries
c. Infant mortality has declined by more than 50% due in large part to
effective immunization programs
d. China has the highest amount of carbon emissions of any country in
the world
2. View the World Population Datasheet Infographic and answer the following:
a. How will the location of population change between 2014 and 2050? Identify
changes by continents and by countries.
a. In 2050, Africa is predicted to have an extremely large growth in
population. Europe will be on the decline, with Asia increasing in
population only slightly. India will become the largest country in the
world, with the USA increasing to almost 400 million people.
b. Describe the trends on each continent for Fertility Rate, Infant Mortality Rate
& Life Expectancy between 1970 and today.
a. Each continent will see a decrease in TFR and IMR, but Life Expectancy
will increase in every continent.
c. Describe the difference between Population Structure in 1970 and today.
a. The base of the world population pyramid is narrower, which indicates
less younger people. The population pyramid of today shows a very
narrow top, indicating more old people.
d. List countries that have made the most progress in reducing maternal and
child mortality rates and speculate 3 reasons for the high % reduction.
a. Egypt, China, Peru, - Decrease in child mortality. Cambodia, Eritrea,
and Laos, - Reduce in maternal mortality rates. These are because of
healthcare cost going down, industrialization, and better health care
systems.
3. View Hans Roslings presentation entitled Population growth explained with
IKEA boxes. Write a brief paragraph essay explaining your agreement or
disagreement with his conclusion Only by raising the living standards of the
poorest, in an environmentally-friendly way, will population growth stop at 9
billion people in 2050.
a. I personally agree with Roslings statement due to how reasonable it is.
Populations increase due to high IMR, which causes families to grow
rapidly. If the IMR is reduced and poverty diminished, high fertility rates
will be unneeded.
4. Add these items to the Unit 2 Population & Migration page of your Google Site by
